The right Dosage of Benadryl for dogs? My yorkie (6-7lbs) is suffering from dry skin that he keeps scratching causing it to scab. I have heard that giving benadryl to dogs is okay as long as it is the correct dosage. I want to give him some to help soothe his dry skin and help him relax during the night. Also, is there any type of oil that can go on him after bath time that will help? He had fleas and received 4 baths in 4 days. That is what dried his skin out; which caused him to itch, therefore producing scabs. He had fleas and received 4 baths in 4 days. That is what dried his skin out; which caused him to itch, therefore producing scabs. Thank you everyone. Children's benadryl chewables does come in 12.5 mg. This would be perfect for my dog if cut in half.

success_marker replied: "Give your vet a call. This is a very small dog and if you dose him wrong it could spell disaster. Vet advice is free and the peace of mind can be priceless."

Sassy Shibas - R.I.P, Justin. replied: "The right dosage is the amount your vet suggests. Call them, I'm sure they're open! :-) Yorkies are small and will need a small amount."

♥PomMom♥®™ replied: "I'm going to tell you the exact same thing I told someone else just a few minutes ago. Call your vet. THE CALL IS FREE! Don't get medication dosage advice from strangers on the internet!"

manetna2 replied: "The dosage for Benedryl is 1mg per pound."

Ingrid replied: "Go to a Vet. The problem may be internal as well as external. Good advise from a Vet will save a lot of grieve for the pet and you."

BC replied: "vitamin e works good.. pill form"

julie d replied: "I would not only call you Vet, I would make an appt. to see the Vet. This might not be just dry skin, it might be something that requires a skin scraping to diagnose."

♥Golden gal♥ replied: "Benadryl will not help dry irritated skin. Your vet will need to see why your dog has this problem in the first place. It could be as simple as a food allergy or seasonal allergies to fleas. Giving your dog OTC meds is dangerous and should not be given unless your vet has told you to do so. Call and ask! It's free!"

Brooke replied: "Use liquid benadryl, the capsule will be too much. Give one teaspoon full(5 ml) every 4-6 hours. Just so you know this should be a temporary fix, you dont want a dog on benadryl more than about 3-4 days with out further diagnostics from a veterinarian. If he is scratching an area that is now sort of crusty and moist he may have a hot spot and needs to do to the vet to be treated. Any antihistamine spray you find OTC you can use on your little guy. A lotion will work as well but it will also get his fur all greasy. I have noticed people say it could be food, its probably NOT. Very few dogs are actually allergic to their food but vets can say they are and get you to buy food that only they can sell to you (prescription food) the most common food allergies a dog has are wheat, corn, beef, and chicken so if you suspect a food allergy you can get a lamb and rice or a vegetarian food at the grocery store. Flea allergies only show up on the back (top) so if its his paws, belly, and armpits it is probably a grass/flower allergy."

minpin replied: "You should find out what is causing the dry skin. Benadryl might help wit the itching but not the cause. I was recommended by my vet to massage vitamin e oil directly into my minins coat, he had demodemic mites, and after months of treatments his coat was almost gone. The vitamin e worked great. HIs coat is a beautiful shiny black now. You should really be working with a good vet who you can call for advice on different issues and if he says bring your dog in, then do so."

mommy without a baby replied: "I have an 8 pound dog who suffers from seasonal allergies. He starts wheezing really bad and whatnot. I give him 1/4 of a childrens Benedryl allergy chewables. I give it to him once per day and he is fine. The vet actually recommended it for him. I would however take your dog to the vet because he could have skin problems due to the food you feed him, shampoo, bit by something, or many other factors."

Jinny E replied: "I don't think benadryl will work for dry skin, it is for allergies. Go to the vet's office, or the local pet store. There are shampoos and conditioners for that, I use oatmeal soap and conditioner for mine and it helps a lot. There are also sprays for itching. Good luck."

Lyn B replied: "Call your vet. My cocker is 35 pounds and he take one Bendryal a day for his allergies. ."

kaththea s replied: "If the problem is not an allergy, Benadryl will not solve it, no matter what the dosage. If it's just dry skin, there are supplements specifically designed to cure the problem. What you ought to do is ask your vet! And don't bathe him so often without specific instructions from your vet. More than every couple of weeks is too often."

Kristin B © replied: "The dosage may have been listed here (supposedly 1 mg/ lb) but most pills come in 25 mg. How are you going to get 7 mg from a 25 mg pill? You are in a precarious situation, you need to consult your VET about this, a wrong dosage will do more harm than good."

newmrsk0315 replied: "Call your vet just to be sure. I have a 3 pound yorkie and he had an allergic reaction to his shot for kennel cough. I called the vet and they told me to only give him 1/8 of a teaspoon of children's benadryl. The best thing to do would be to call your vet, they will give you the best recommendation and they know your pet better than any of us. On a side note my yorkie has dry skin also and i found a medicated shampoo for dry skin at PetSmart and it works wonders on him. If your Yorkie is scratching that bad it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to bring that up to your vet as well."

What is the Children's LIQUID Benadryl dosage for English Bulldogs? My vet told me it is OK to give my dog Benadryl when she has itchy skin, (she has a skin condition). I forgot what the dosage is. I bought Children's Liquid Benadryl. I know the pill dosage is 1mg per pound, but, what is the dosage for the liquid formula?

hayesbrat replied: "basically a childrens dose, its a quarter to a half of what you would give yourself. so just however much you would give a child"

what is the right dosage of benadryl to give a dog? I've been reading online about it being okay to give your dog benadryl for allergies and I was wondering if someone could tell me the mg/weight. I have a 23lb beagle/basset mix and I wasn't sure if I should give him children's benadryl or regular benadryl and how much? Also is there any good websites to read up about what supplements I could give him for his skin??

Jambi replied: "Our labs weigh about 90 pounds each, we give them 4 25mg tabs at a time. It works wonders for them, and doesn't seem to knock them out. Your best bet however, would be to call a vet, they will be able to tell you over the phone how much is appropriate for your dogs weight. For their skin (and a great coat) we give them a food supplement called 'The Missing Link' . It has many vitamins, anti-oxidants, fiber, and other things in it. There are a few different formulas, so you would have to research which one would be the best for you. We get at our vets office, and a local store here called Farm and Fleet also carries it. I am sure many of the online pet supply places also carry it. Long Live Jambi"

jam_please replied: "huh?"

Patricia S replied: "Please check with your vet about this."

cs replied: "The usual doseage is 1mg per pound. Its important to make sure you use plain benadryl, nothing that says cold and sinus. These contain tylenol and other medications dogs cant take. You should have your dog seen by a vet first to make sure it is allergies you are seeing and not a skin infection or other problem."

coolhandven replied: "Definitely a vet question as the amount will differ based on weight and the extent of the issue. For example, I had a 5 pound puppy that had a reaction from distemper and became as big as a watermelon and they gave her a human sized dose to solve that. If it is just for the sniffles I would go by the weight to ml the earlier person stated. Wing it by the vet either way!"

Great Dane Lady replied: "Here's a site that will tell you about this and other otc meds "

What dosage of benadryl should I give my dog? I called the vet, and he said to give her childrens benadryl for her cough until I can get her in to see him, but I forgot to ask what dosage. She weighs 5 lbs. Thanks!!! Thank you!!! I was trying to keep from having to call him back so late...but I guess that's why he's on call! ;)

Lucy ♫ replied: "Time to call the vet back - that's the safest route. She could have different needs, it doesn't matter if she weighs 5 lbs. or not. I hope she feels better soon. ADDED: Welcome. :) I didn't want to give information that I didn't know. Vets are on call, gah. I'd love to raise a family someday, and I don't want to be a vet. I couldn't handle volunteering at the vets either. :("

~::JAEL::~ replied: "my dog takes 6 10mg pills a day for allergies and she's 60lbs so im thinkin like 5mg its roughly 1 mg a lb"

emtcoop46 replied: "Dose her like you would a child, granted you wouldn't give a five lb child this type of med. but you get the idea."

cathy h replied: "She's too small to take the chance, call the vet back and ask! Doesn't he have a receptionist?, that way you can tell her to ask. Good luck!"

Dogs'n'trike replied: "The standard dose is 1/2 to 1 mg/lb of dog weight. Sometimes a vet will suggest that you go higher, up to 2 mg/lb, but I wouldn't do that without checking with your veterinarian. Benadryl can make your dog sleepy and thirsty. It is an antihistamine. It's fairly safe to use, but I'd still check with your veterinarian to see exactly what dose he recommends. Wrapping the pill (or portion of a pill) in cheese will make it go down easily. I hope your dog gets better quickly!"

Benadryl for dog allergies. Does it work and dosage? I have a female Labrador that has seasonal allergies and during the spring scratches alot. She also loses hair on her back and behind the ears and skin looks irritated. We have treated her with a shot from the vet but it only works for a few weeks. So will 25mg of Benadryl help? Also and most importantly what kind of dosage of the 25mg should I use in a day for a 60-65lbs female lab.

Charlie Bucket replied: "I would try half a tab and see if that works, if not a whole tab is probably OK, but there is also probably better info on the web."

thenakedwookie replied: "The general rule is 1 mg per lb. Have you asked your vet about chlorpheniramine, hydroxizine, or clemastine? Have they been giving your pup diphenhydramine? It's the same as Benadryl. Just give 'em a call! Ask them what each medicine does."

agilebxr replied: "I have used the kids benadryl for my dogs and dose according to the weight of the dog -- so if a 70 pound kid takes 25 mg, that's what I give to the dog. I haven't used it long term, tho --just for occasional itchy periods."

stacy g replied: "My dog suffers from allergies and we give him one tab in the am and one in the pm he doe pretty good and weighs the same as your lab. Also if she has skin issues with her allergies bathe her weekly in head and shoulders shampoo to help soothe and heal the irritated skin. I am a professional pet groomer and Head and Shoulders truely is above the rest."

Bozema replied: "It does work but the dose is weight dependent so you should check with the vet to make sure you get the dose right. I've also started having a groomer come once a month for a full bath to get pollens out of his coat (next year I might do this every two weeks during allergy season). This has helped a lot. I also switched his food to California Natural which is hypoallergenic since he seems to have food allergies too. By doing those two things, I've been able to drop the benadryl."

JeN replied: "The dosage for Benedryl in dogs is 2-4mg/kg (divide lbs by 2.2 to get kg). Try the Benedryl first, you can give it up to 3 times per day at maximum dose. If it doesn't work, switch to Claritin 10mg tabs (1 to 1.5 tabs once a day for your dog's size). Antihistamines can work wonders, and shame shame SHAME on your vet for allowing you to depend on steroid injections to control your dog's allergies, without educating you on the alternatives. Bathing your pet is also a good idea, twice a week is best while she experiences severe symptoms. New research is showing that 40% or more of our allergic response is caused by absorption of allergens through the skin, so the more you keep those allergens off the better off she'll be. Finding a good quality shampoo that will help soothe her skin will probably make her very happy :)"

AtsiLass replied: "My vet tells me I can give my 50lb Aussie as much as 50mg of Benedryl for allergy treatments. It is, however, not a good solution for significant allergies (such as ones that would cause reactions so intense as to produce hair loss). It will also make your dog lethargic, so may not be a good all around solution. Ask your vet about alternative treatments to over-the-counter meds. It will benefit your dog in the long run."

iluvtorofl replied: "The vet just told us to use two 80 mg dosages for an 80+lb dog 4-6 hours apart for a snake bite. She slept all the time, but it did take down the swelling. He said it was a huge dose, but it would work and it did. She had no ill effects, so it must be a safe drug in relatively high dosages."

River Hermit replied: "Hello.. 1/2 mg per lb every 8 hours ..up to 2 mgs per lb..it comes in pills & liquid, best way to get any meds down, if he gives you hard time is peanut butter works for dogs & cats ;) good luck & take care :) Hmmm wonders which Head & Shoulders, there's only some 10 different kinds !?!"

JR replied: "60lbs you can give two. - Funny I just had to go restock on Benedryl for the dogs. If two doesn't work she may need a cortisone shot. I hjave one that would need one once a year. It was seasonal allergies to something outside and I could maintain it with benedryl until fall then he went silly and I have to take him once a year."

fairbetsy replied: "I cut one in half and add the powder to my dogs breakfast. He is a 18 pound pug with awful allergies. The vet put him on Benadryl and it doesn't make him sleepy at all. Good Luck!"

DP replied: "Depends on the allergy.. Benedryl might help it might now.. Depends on what she is allergic to.. It's best to get the vet to diagnose the problem and then you can properly treat. Benedryl is just one allergy medication, there are many, some might be more effective for your dog."

Patricia L replied: "MY VET TOLD ME TO US THE LIQUID. IT IS ADMIN. BY WEIGHT. ASK YOUR VET HOW MUCH YOU SHOULD GIVE YOU DOG. MY DOG IS A YORKIE, LESS THAT 8# SO HER DOSAGE WOULD BE CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN YOUR DOG. BE SAFE, ASK YOUR VET."

KimmieLinh replied: "I had to give that to my dog when he got stung by a bee.... the emergency vet told me that it should be 1 lb per 1 mg. Check with your vet first tho... I hope you dog gets better"

Kristin G replied: "Benadryl is safe for most dogs, call you vet and make sure that she's not allergic to anything in it and ask for dosages just to be safe:)"

BVC_asst replied: "Why not just call the vet and ask them? Then you'll have an answer by a professional. He might be able to prescribe shampoo and or cream to help with the itching."

sniffydogs replied: "I wouldn't take dosages from anyone on this list unless you want to kill your dog. Why don't you get a Vet that can actually treat the allergies? Benedryl is a temporary fix at best."

elysianhunter replied: "Clemastine (brand name Tavist) works better in dogs and usually only has to be given twice a day. Our girls (Belgian Malinois and GSD/Chow mix) take 1 tablet (1.34 mg) morning and evening. Benadryl works for some dogs (didn't work well for my girls) but the dosage and frequency of dosing for a Labrador or other large breed might be impractical. You can order generic clemastine on-line without prescription, however you will want to check with your Vet to see if this is OK. Generally clemastine is safe and has few side effects. Give it 10 days to 2 weeks to see the full benefit- though I have been told it only works for about 60-75% of dogs. Also try eliminating corn and wheat from her diet. There are a number of corn and wheat free dog foods on the market. This helped our Malinois greatly as she is prone to both allergic dermatitis and hot spots. Her skin improved markedly within a week of eliminating corn."

cricket replied: "Benadryl (generic name:diphenhydramine) can help with the dog's itching, but you should consult with your vet about any other medications that may help....corticosteriods like prednisone can help for a bit longer (not a long-term solution, but is ok for short time). Also, consider other irritants....removing other irritants may lessen your dog's threshold to the allergens. I once had a dog that was very allergic to the corn in his diet and once his diet was changed, many of his symptoms lessened. So consider her diet, shampoo, and grass (big allergen for some dogs!)....."

neth_dwarf2004 replied: "Before we would give our dogs shots we would give them children's bendryl so they wouldn't have an allregic reation to the shot. So i wouldn't see why you couldn't give it to your dog to help with allergies. I would treat her with 1/2 of what a human child would get, but I'm no veterinarian so I would say call and ask how much and all that. Your local vet should volunteer this information."

denverpassion30 replied: "per my vet, at dog that big CAN handle 1 pill. It works pretty well but you might have to look into cortisone shots/pills I have a lab mix that does that every time the seasons change. Good Luck."

dobiegang replied: "Hi, here is a web site that will help you figure out the dosage. It may help. I have had dogs that it has helped & others that it hasn't. I am sure it will not hurt to try. Good luck to you & your dog!!! An emergency vet once perscribed 25mg. 2 pills ( at one time) to be taken twice a day for a 65lb Doberman, due to a bee sting reaction."

What is the dosage of Benadryl and Omega 3 for my Westie with allergies? Benadryl and omega for dogs with allergies

Sam replied: "Benadryl. 1 miligram per pound of Dog. For example if your Westie is 25 pounds, she'd get one pill (since they usually come in 25 mg increments)."

izzylauren01 replied: "No one can answer that without an actual weight. And I wouldn't listen to what dosages people will give you on here because someone just gave you a high dose for it and no vet ever uses the highest dose for something they hadn't tried in your pet before. Plus if you go ahead and do the highest dose, you have nothing to move up to when her immune system becomes immune to benadryl. Call your vet."

curiouserika replied: "Call your vet. He'll tell you."

me me replied: "My vet told me to give 1milligram for every pound the dog weighs."

Dogjudge replied: "I sold omega 3 fish oil for 5 years to various food companies. One capsule per day is safe for all dogs. The only downside is if you got into HUGE dosages. Omega 3s thin your blood. WAY TOO MUCH can make it hard for you to clot. If your dog is going to have any type of surgery you should stop the omega 3s a couple of weeks before the surgery. Out dogs think they're treats! It turns out to be a GREAT way to teach dogs to take pills. You can do it with other things."

Benadryl dosage for German Shepherds? The vet told me I could give my dog 25mg capsules of Benadryl for her allergies. I cannot remember if it was 2 pills or 3 pills. I also cannot remember if it was once a day, every 6 hours, etc. Does anyone give Benadryl to their GSD? If so, how much and how often. Thanks! She weighs 58 lbs. The vet told me on my way out the door so I didn't have a chance to write it down.

drb replied: "I have been told by vets that you can give 1 mg / lb body weight, so 2 would be the right number for a 58 lb dog. I think that's once a day."

puppychow62 replied: "I use to safely give my dog 25 mg (1 pill) to my 32 lb. dog twice a day."

polish_vetgirl replied: "the dose is 1mg/pound (95% sure) a slight overdose isn't a huge deal if it is wrong... so that would mean 2 capsules and it is generally given 2 times a day. I would call your vet to double check before giving it though, it isn't going to hurt the dog to wait a few more hours."

♥ DP ♥ replied: "If he said you could give 25 mg capsules of Benedryl, then you should call him for how many you should give. he's your vet, he knows better than anyone here, when it comes to a drug that can cause antihistimine toxicity if you over do it.. how much of a benadryl dosage should i give my dog? I have a 5 year old beagle who for the last 3 days hasnt stoped itching..he has been itching so bad he made raw spots ..he doesnt have fleas worms or anything like that..Im thinking it might be a food allergy since that is the only thing i have changed in the last 4 days..i tried the anti itch spray and that doesnt work ..i am changing his food back ASAP but i want to make him comfortable while the rash is healing...so what type of benadryl should i give him?and how much of adoseage? his weight is 35 pounds

Cheryl H replied: "Your vet is the only one that can accurately dose your beagle. The usual dose for that size dog is 25 mg., but don't take my word for it! You might also try bathing him with an oatmeal collidal shampoo from the pharmacy and giving him fish oil supplements on a daily basis. If you can, for the time being rub some hydrocortisone cream on him this should give a lot of relief to the poor baby. It's always best to consult your vet before trying anything."

raregoldtx66 replied: "Yes you can use benedryle , the dose is about one mg per pound of body weight . Children's Benedryle tablets are 12.5 mg i think and adult tablets are 25 . The liquid is terrible tasting . use tablets u can break . use peanut butter to hide it . You could give him one and a half adult tablets (25mg) that would make about 37 mg all together . it should be fine . and you can give every 8-10 hours if needed . it will or may make him tired . also my dog got a rash from a food allergy and it didnt clear with benedryle , I just had him to vet on friday and it had turned into a skin infection so watch to make sure it clears , i tried the benedryle first too ! now he is on antibiotic and had a shot of it also and a depo medrol shot for his allergies . hope this helps"

Is it safe to give a dog Benadryl to treat allergies? My dog has severe itching due to allergies and it gets so expensive to go to the vet every month and get a $100 cortisone shot. I would like to look into some home remedies that might provide relief for my 7 1/2 year old Yorkie. Does anyone know if Benadryl is safe for dogs and if it works (what would be the correct dosage be)? Any ideas would be much appreciated...thank you :) I am currently feeding him Addiction brand kangeroo and apples dog food.

Kaetlyn replied: "It is safe, but you do want to call the vet and ask what dosage to give. You don't have to take them in, just call and ask. Dogs metabolize things differently than we do, and it will go by weight rather than age (as the dosage goes for people). Also, depending on what causes the allergy, it may or may not work. Your best bet along with the benadryl or any other allergy medication is to also make sure you try and minimize the exposure to whatever is causing the allergy."

QueenBee replied: "I would consult a vet though...they will tell you what you can and can't give your dog. Dog's don't usually get allergies for no reason....it is usually a result from something they are exposed to....something they eat, something on the grass...."

♥PomMom♥®™ replied: "Only if your vet advised it and gave you the proper dosage."

fatima g replied: "talk to your vet first about giving him Benadryl. So you don't end up overdosing him"

Once Upon a Cowgirl replied: "No! whatever you do, do not give it benadryl if you do that could be fatal. You might try some of the over the counter medicines at a vet/pharmacy. But do not give it people medicine. I tried it once and my dog got very sick after that. You should also make sure that your dog isn't allergic to any meds."

millypeed replied: "It is safe and I have given it to my Lab for her allergies, but you need to check with the vet about the correct dosage, and you need to use children's Benadryl, not adults. Have you tried antihistamines, I get these form the vet, not very expensive and they do work better than Benadryl."

Danielle replied: "well my dad gave our 5 year old min-pin, daschund mix benadryl when he had some back pain and an ear inffection and it seemed to work out fine. i'm not sure the ammount he gave him. i would ask your vet though to see what they would recomend. hope this helped."

Mustang Sally replied: "Yes. I recommend using childrens liquid benadryl so you can give the correct amount. 1-2 mg per pound. 2 mg being if it is a very bad allergy causing itching and hives. It is not harmful. Use a medicine dropper to get the correct dosage and put into the check to let them drink it. At 2 mg it will make your dog sleepy. If this is an on going allergy the way to treat the dog is to find out what is causing it. What food are you feeding your dog. I bet that is the problem."

Cait...Wants a dog :) replied: "Is it okay for a dog to eat a pound of chocolate? Go to your vet for allergy medicine!"

Lucy replied: "My vet has suggested Benedryl and also Claritin for my dog's allergies. You just need to find out the proper dose."

wishnuwelltoo replied: "Not if it has a decongestant."

froggy replied: "yes it's safe just don't give him/her a lot. if it's doesn't weight alot about 1/2 teaspoon should be enough. if u want u can give him a little less to see how it's going to work. that way if it not enough u will and if the 1/2 is too much then if u start w/ less than 1/2 a teaspoon and work your way up it would be better. but it want hurt the dog it might make him sleepy but thats about it. good luck"

On the Radio Uh Oh replied: "Benadryl is safe to use on dogs in the correct dosage, though like with people it's not best to use more than a week or so in a row. If he has a skin allergies, a topical spray from the vet would probably be best. Basically a steroidal spray that you just spray and the itchy part and it relieves itching - nothing internal and no shot necessary. My dog also has bad allergies and it works wonders... spray a couple times a day for 4 or 5 days and the rash is gone... the bottle lasts months and is only like 20-some dollars. However, if you do really want to give Benadryl... don't do so for a long period of time, and I'd suggest calling the vet for dosage. The 1-2 milligram per lb rule (generally 2 to 3 times a day max) is basically good, but it can vary depending on severity (such as with a person... a poison oak rash is gonna require more than a couple bug bites, etc...) and other health factors. Basically, just call a vet who knows your dog's medical history and ask them... as we obviously don't know all the specifics."

Me replied: "Check the benadril bottle and if it says tested on animals it is safe..... i think it is but i dont want to kill your poor yorkie"
