Effexor 250 Mg Posts in Q&A
Anyone one take Effexor and/or Trazidone during pregnancy? Did you breastfeed and how is your child now? Behavorial-wise, mentally, physically etc. My psychiatrist tell me one things, other docs say another. I'm confused and worried. I want the best for my future child, but I suffered from severe depression several years ago (it runs in my family) and still have bouts. On a pretty high dosage (250 mg of Effexor) and 10-30 mg for Trazidone (for sleep, not sure I can give this up b/c I've had this disorder since childhood, and used to have blackouts/bad migraines when not on anything). But I want a HEALTHY child w/o jeopardizing my own health. Some peeps might think selfish to be on anything, but I can't be that depressed again no matter what. I wouldn't survive it. Please help. In response to Jennifer. I am not pregnant yet. I have been thinking of trying for the last 3 years now and have been discussing with my psychiatrist (med provider) for two years. I have yet to discuss w/ an OB/GYN but I have heard his response (okay). I've made the decision to try and wean off the Effexor (which is scary) and try different approaches for sleep (though meds might be my only option). Don't think I'm being selfish. I'm investing my heart and life into this child when I do conceive. I worry to death. Why would I risk my own life (without meds where I could become suicidal once again) to have this baby? But I'm also gathering all the facts, whether better to be depressed w/o meds or non-depressed on meds to conceive. Best scenario is neither, but I also have to plan for realistic situations. Please don't call me selfish. I've not conceived yet for this very reason. When I say I heard his response I mean my psychiatrist who has worked w/ many OB/GYN doctors and women who have been pregnant on anti-depressants.

Jennifer replied: "I am prepared to get slammed for this answer, but is has to be said. You weren't thinking of your unborn child before you decided to get pregnant, did you? If you need to be on these drugs, then getting pregnant was not a smart move. I feel I have the right to say this because I, too, have suffered from anxiety and depression for the past ten years and have made the conscious choice to not have a baby until I am better and more able to care for a child. I'm not trying to be heartless here, but you have to make hard decisions in life. Would I like to have a baby? Sure..but it wouldn't be fair to the child. These drugs were not meant to be taken while pregnant or nursing. Maybe you can speak to your Dr. about different alternatives. You have to start thinking for your unborn child - and not just yourself. You say "why would I risk my own life for my baby..." I don't know. Why do you want to have a baby and risk harming it at the same time? That is selfishness..plain and simple."

why wnt these darn meds work? i went to the doctor friday to review my bloodwork for my lithium. i suppose everything was fine so i went from 1200 to 1800 mg and 250 mg of effexor and xanax as needed. i have been on the effexor for 2 months and on the lthium for 2 and a half weeks. since he upped it, should it kick in faster. i have anxiety and bipolar mania. when will this work? i hate feeling this way!!!!!

C~A~L~I replied: "consult with ur physician!!! no one here can give u a str8 up answer!"

omarionsgirl1983 replied: "give it time or maybe u need to talk to ur doc to get another drug that can help u try lexapro"

judasrabbi replied: "Some take time to kick in"

trish replied: "some of it could be your diet eliminate all caffeine from your diet and your should learn some calming techniques"

beerbohms replied: "Antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs take awhile to "kick in", even if you up the dosage, it could take 3 weeks to 1 month."

Is it safe to go through pregnancy on anti-depressants without harming your baby? I had severe depression several years ago and have been on various anti-depressants since. This disease runs in my family. I still have bouts with it and had to increase my medication (250 mg of Effexor) about 2 years ago. I also have a sleep disorder, have my whole life. Take about 10-30 mg of Trazidone (also used as an anti-depressant) for sleep. My hubby and me want to conceive a child. I'm hoping to wean off my Effexor starting in the late summer, even though I've still had hard times. I need to (at least for now) stay on the Trazidone. I have heard mixed information on whether it is okay to continue anti-depressant medication (or any meds) while pregnant. Anyone have to do this and did your child turn out healthy. I couldn't stand if I was the cause of my future child's disabilities, but I can't suffer either. Also, did you get to breastfeed? I need to look out for myself and my child, as depression isn't good, but either is medication. HELP!

Amber A replied: "ask your OB they would know for sure!"

Reagan P replied: "ask your OB they are the only ones that can tell you what is safe, and what is not. For you being so severe it might be better for you to be one something low dose, but you'll HAVE to consult a dr. before ttc."

Mich replied: "I went through my first pregnancy on Zoloft (and breastfed on it, too). They told me it was safe at the time - my daughter is 8 years old now and has a lot of behavioral problems (to the point she got expelled from school), although she hasn't been diagnosed with anything. Her younger sisters have no such problems and I didn't take antidepressants anymore when I was pregnant with them. Now, this is purely anecdotal and it may have nothing to do with the Zoloft, but I suspect it might."

JESSICA R replied: "Usually because there is already a build up of the drug in your body, getting pregnant on it and carrying a baby to term is usually ok. After though the baby may have withdrawl symptoms. BEFORE getting pregnant, I'd talk to your care provider about wanting to get pregnant and what effects the medication could have on your baby and the safety of the drugs and conceiving and having a baby on them. They may not be safe drugs."

SM replied: "Yes, its quite possible to stay on anti-depressants and have a successful pregnancy, however, it's not safe to take the Effexor or Trazidone. Trazidone can and most likely will cause severe mental retardation. (My Phsycologist had told me that when I was on it). He went as far as to say it's almost a guarentee. Trazidone, as you probably already know is an anti seizure med also used to treat depression and sleep disorders. Your Dr. would most likely be switched to something that the Dr.'s that have more experience with like Zoloft and they'll most likely not give you anything else. You should really sit down with your Dr. and see what the best course of action is.... I wish you the best & hope you'll be posting some good news soon!"

Marissa S replied: "When I was pregnant with my first son I was on Lexapro for depression and Trazidone for sleep. I was told that it was okay for me to continue to take those meds. In fact, my doctor said that it was better for me to stay on than to be depressed the entire time. Anyway, my son turned out perfectly fine. And yes, I did breastfeed. I don't think it's necissary to wean off your anti-depressants, in fact it may be dangerous for you. Talk to your doctor and make sure though. You may have to switch anti-depressants because I don't think all of them are safe for pregnancy. I know Lexapro was but I really don't know anything about Effexor."

broken angel replied: "You really should consult your OB because it is possible for them to prescribe you an anti depressant that's safer or they feel more comfortable with you taking."

Leslie B replied: "i took zoloft the whole time i was pregnant wiht my son. i didnt breastfeed"

MommyOfTwoButtercups replied: "I was On Effexor When I got Pregnant With My first Child My Ob Would Not Allow Me to Take Effexor Well Pregnant And Made Me come Off Of It.I Know Some Are More Safe To Use well You Are Pregnant But Effexor Is Not One of Them."
