Everyday Heartburn Information in Q&A
Does having heartburn everyday mean I could be pregnant? I know its not acid reflux because before a week ago I would only get heartburn once in a great while.

Bobbie replied: "It could mean that you might be pregnant but not necessarily. Some people do get heartburn like crazy when pregnant. I have it that bad that I throw up every day! Take a pregnancy test to find out."

Richard S replied: "If that's a sign of pregnancy, then I'm in trouble."

cindy replied: "it's unlikely to be a first symptom, but it is possible. take a test to find out :) good luck!"

Remember To Breathe! replied: "Usually heartburn happens when the baby is large enough to be pushing on your digestive organs (especially stomach and small intestine) and forces stomach juice into the esophagus. It may be something else if you aren't showing any other signs or aren't showing. Check with a doctor to be sure!"

I have Heartburn EVERYDAY. what should i do? well i have heartburn everyday . I take rollaids. and they work for about an hour or two. but then it comes back. and the bad thing is im only 15 and people tell me im to young to have heartburn but apperialty not. i take Yaz birth control. i didnt think that would be the problem. but it may. if anybody could help me find another way to get ride of it. please do.

sunshinegirl replied: "Ask your mom if you could take prilosec-I would also talk to your doctor"

Miss T replied: "It could be the birth control. Other factors could be if you smoke or drink coffee. Prilosec works, but you should really see a Dr as yes it can lead to the eventual erosion of the lining of your esophagus"

What everyday foods are good for pregnancy heartburn? Well folks, I am hitting that third trimester, and the baby is high enough and pushing everything up enough to give me good old heartburn at night. I just wanted to see what natural suggestions people had for getting rid of the heartburn. This is my second time around and I don't remember what all I did with my first, besides Tums. I'm looking for more along the lines of what I should put in dinner to help.

hhsbandgeek replied: "flat pop ( icky as that sounds) and crackers"

Kayla's Mommy replied: "Green Apples helped at first but my heart burn and indigestion was so bad that I had to get a prescription from the doctor to help me. Everything stopped working."

alexis73102 replied: "Avoid alot of sodium if you can. But honestly heartburn will happen no matter what because everything is so squished due to the size of the baby. There have been times I've taken a deep breath to yawn and got heartburn."

Hot mami replied: "eat crackers and sip a tablespoon full of olive juice i know gross but it helped me also dnt eat greasy foods and dnt drink anything wit ur meal eat ur meals alone n then have sumthin to drink"

Sabs replied: "My grandmother used boiled potatoes since she refused to put any chemicals at all in her body. Hope it helps. I find that starchy foods do cut down for me but I need pepcid ac and tums.... Actually told by my doc I could take both. That's the only reason I am doing both and starches :D"

Lucy S replied: "milk is a great help to!"

Hello Friend replied: "Have a glass of chocolate milk with your dinner, it's helped me immensely!"

Sandra87 replied: "Banana's are awesome. I had indigestion every single day of my pregnancy, The only thing that helped me was ALOT of milk and banana's. Also try taking some liquid antacids such as mylanta or gaviscon. These helped me alot!"

qtey2002 replied: "Well Drinking a cup of milk always helps me. I'm 33 wks along and I know all about the heartburn. Another thing you could do would be to try and hold off on your tomato type foods. That's one of the worse heartburn starters for me bc of the acidicness of anything tomato LOL. Also keep a extra large container of tums by your bed at nite ;) Water sometimes helped also, or taking a bath. Dunno why but it works for me"

Angelina's Mommy replied: "i used Rolaids. When you eat spicy food or foods that have alot of grease go for a walk and wait 3 hours before you go to sleep. Prop up your head with a blanket or a pillow to that helps alot."

Is my getting hammered everyday causing my really bad heartburn? my blood pressure was 149/88 and I look like I am in great shape. 24, I mean I am not fat, I am built well.

walkjax replied: "definitely could be..."

WMD replied: "probably"

lastcaress21 replied: "It's a very good probability."

RCrumb replied: "That's a fair assessment. And what do you think it is also doing to your brain?"

Premo Mom replied: "Probably so. Lay off for a bit and see if it makes a difference."

foxyfaerie replied: "Could be. My fiancé has a hole in his stomach lining from drinking too much. Because of this he produces too much stomach acid, which is one cause of heartburn."

truce replied: "yes. antacid might help. better yet, cut down on stress"

gallaxynurse replied: "could be. causes many health related problems. even if you're just 'partying' and not a true alcoholic. be careful. well your blood pressure is elevated. that's not good. time for a doctor appointment."

Lynnie replied: "Yes. Esopageal varices Here is what you do. Drink as much as you can. Develop esopageal varices and a really bad liver. Your esophagus bleeds and you digest the blood. Oh oh blood is very high protein and your shut down liver can't handle it. You will be spewing coffee ground consistency blood and bleed out. Good luck with that. People will just stand by and watch you die. They may try blood transfusions but once your coagulation is totally frigged up it won't work."

Mark D replied: "Getting hammered is hurtin' you more than the heartburn!"

EJ replied: "That's just the beginning dude. You're on the high road to all kinds of chronic symptoms. Soon you be fatigued all the time. Then your eating habits are going to fail you. Sleep deprivation is just around the corner.. So yeah..........I'd say a minor little issue like heartburn could be attributed to your irresponsible choices."

Nygirlgonesouth replied: "yes, it most likely is the cause. I would really think about getting "hammered" everyday, but to each their own. if you want to continue that lifestyle, i would take Pepcid AC or any other brand of acid reducer. But please think about the damage you are doing to your liver. I'm not one to judge, we all have our own crosses to bear, and I too got hammered everyday when i was in my early 20's. I am only thankful that i "grew up" and realized there was more to life! I wish you the best! Also, sometime people drink alot to help them "forget" about problems with their family or life. Maybe you should sit down and write a list why you drink? what makes you happy? sad? I bet you can figure it all out and just get hammered on the weekend! it's a start! good luck!"

KRYSTL replied: "yes, my boyfriend has heartburn all the time."

mason pearson replied: "If your blood pressure is 149/88 you are NOT in great shape. That is high. If you are as young as I think you may be it is VERY high"

jimmy d. replied: "I suggest you seek medical...and psychological attention at once! You are not only deteriorating your digestive system, but your brain, as well!"

maggie replied: "Yes, it's very likely. Alcohol tampers with the acidity in your stomach... that's just the beginning of it though... for instance, if you get so drunk you throw up, you might have damaged the muscle that controls what goes in to your stomach from your esophagus (and keeps stuff from going back up again). Also, if you drink a lot you might not be taking care of yourself in other ways, like eating an optimal diet, and that can make a huge difference. You can certainly reverse some of the damage if you cut back on drinking and cleaned up your diet. Certain food can make heartburn worse, obviously."

why do I get a headache and heartburn everyday for the past month or more? no I am not pregnant, Not that I am aware, I have been on the birhcontrol pill for 7 yrs

dhupc replied: "ulcer, hiatus hernia or just bad indigestion time for a visit to the doctors good luck"

rishathra7 replied: "try eating a lot of small meals throughout the day. it will digest easier on your stomach fixing the heartburn and keep your blood sugar steady which could be causing headaches."

jak9372 replied: "stress"

Painted Cowboy replied: "stress can triger both headaches as well as acid reflux, I have a similar problem when really stressed, thank G*d for Tagamet, find the soruce and correct it, heartburn is not something to put off, go see your doctor if it lasts that long."

cocobeachzanzibar replied: "are you pregnant?"

17 year old getting heartburn everyday? im 17 years old and i get heartburn like everyday and it sometimes makes me feel really sick i dnt think anything of it but my gf is saying i should go to doctors cos her grandad was having heartburn problems and died of a heart attack but i think im too young for anything like tht to happen but is there anything wrong and is it serious if there is??

Sue replied: "If you're getting heartburn every day then your doctor needs to know. It may be GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disorder), and you may need to be on an acid-reducer. Uncontrolled frequent heartburn like yours can cause *serious* damage to your esophagus, so please go get some help."

heartburn everyday? What is going on? Ok....for the past like 4 months I have had HEARTBURN everyday it only comes really when i don't eat for like 2hrs, and if i haven't aten and i drink some water((doesn't matter if its ice cold)) it gets worse. Sometimes I just want to rip my heart out thats how bad it hurts...does anyone have any suggestions to what it is or how to get rid of it..?? thnx!

bluedot replied: "sounds like it could be ulcers...get checked by dr...they will do a blood check ...if you have them they will give you antibacterial meds to clear it up...also pepscid ac or prilosec should help till you do.....hope you feel better soon...might also be symptoms of gallstones, especially if you hurt in your right shoulder and back areas"

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Perhaps you need liquid chlorophyll and pineapple every day. They both help to promote a healthy digestive environment."

I get heartburn everyday? Why do i get heartburn everyday? Whats the cause? It doesn't matter what iv eaten i usually get it anyway? I had it bad through two pregnancies and now even when im not pregnant anymore i still am continuing to get it?? I end up having to chew down heartburn rennie tablets everyday to help ease it. Could this be a sign of something wrong with my insides?

richard k replied: "folks with sleep apnea get heartburn everyday. do you snore?try milk, saltines, and get a pregnancy test."

WHAT Ever replied: "hmm i used to have these problem as well... anyhow, since few months back, i've been trying to drink apple vanegar. one table spoon of applae vanegar and about half glass of water. it helps me a lot ...hopefully u can try it...owh btw, it is also known to cut off some weight at the same time.... good luck!"

Tina replied: "Ask your doctor to check you for an hiatus hernia - that was causing my heartburn. Also try cutting out wheat/flour for a few days and see what happens - could possibly be a wheat intolerance."

Shayna S replied: "I am a frequent heartburn sufferer. You may have acid reflux. I take aciphex almost daily and i rarely get heartburn. I also avoid my triggers, unless i know for sure i took my meds...red sauce spaghetti & orange juice. My dad had it really bad so i probably got it too"

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Pineapple is supposed to help."

Heartburn everyday? I just recently started getting heartburn at around 25/26 weeks. My concern is that I get it the same time everyday no matter what I eat. I thought that heartburn was a random thing but I can basically predict when it will occur. Is that normal or something that I should bring up with my doctor. I am not extremely uncomfortable though I would rather not have the heartburn. Anyone else have heartburn that was like clockwork?

babynumber2ontheway replied: "i suggest u just ask ur dr, i honestly don't know"

PK211 replied: "Heartburn is normal. Try taking a couple Tums -- also good for the calcium content you need."

mother of twin girls replied: "bring it up to your doctor. if you know when its going to happen take a tums like 5 minute before this will help to settle it before it happends! best wishes"

Stephanie B replied: "It is normal. Basically what happens is that as your uterus grows it causes your stomach to have less room in turn causing the heartburn. Bring it up with your OB at your next appointment though. Most doctor's will approve tums for this problem, but if it is severe they can also give you a prescription."

luvourpaps replied: "There's an old wives tail that says if you have heartburn during pregnancy, your baby will be born with lots of hair. I know that's not the answer you were looking for, but thought it was interesting."

crazy2all replied: "I had it with all three of my children. The old wives tale is that if you have heartburn, your child has hair. Mine had a ton, but to be honest with you it was just the combination of food I would eat. I carried some Tums with me in case it got really bad, but rarely took any because at the time I was afraid of taking anything over the counter. Check with your Doctor first, but an over the counter heartburn medicine should help you."

~*NaTaLiE*~ replied: "Many women experience heartburn for the first time during pregnancy — and though it's common and generally harmless, it can be quite uncomfortable. Many women start experiencing heartburn and other gastrointestinal discomforts in the second half of pregnancy. Unfortunately, it usually comes and goes until your baby is born. Though you may not be able to eliminate heartburn entirely, you can take steps to minimize your discomfort: Avoid food and beverages that cause you gastrointestinal distress. The usual suspects are carbonated drinks; alcohol (which you should avoid anyway during pregnancy); caffeine; chocolate; acidic foods like citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, mustard, and vinegar; processed meats; mint products; and spicy, highly seasoned, fried, or fatty foods. Don't eat big meals. Instead, eat several small meals throughout the day. Take your time eating and chew thoroughly. Avoid drinking large quantities of fluids during meals — you don't want to distend your stomach. (It's important to drink eight to ten glasses of water daily during pregnancy, but sip it between meals.) Try chewing gum after eating. Chewing gum stimulates your salivary glands, and saliva can help neutralize acid. Sleep propped up with several pillows or a wedge. Elevating your upper body will help keep your stomach acids where they belong and will aid your digestion. An over-the-counter antacid that contains magnesium or calcium may ease discomfort, but check with your prenatal caregiver before taking one, because some brands contain aluminum or aspirin or are high in sodium. You should also check in with your healthcare provider if none of these suggestions helps."

Emerilla replied: "I'm currently 24 weeks along, and I get heartburn constantly. But, mine is completely random, but gets severe. I know it can be triggered by the foods your eat, or by your back being out of alignment. The fact that your's is like clockwork intrigues me, because I've never heard of it. I would suggest talking to your doctor about it if natural methods, like drinking milk, don't help get rid of it. Good luck! I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well."

BeadyQueen.com replied: "Girl, I remember those days! I had it everyday and some days it was so bad I could not take it. I am one for not taking medicine during pregnancy but randomly I had to. The obgyn prescribed nexium for me. I had heartburn before I got pregnant and that was the only thing that worked for me. She explained to me that it was very normal to get heartburn and went into great detail why. Hang in there it will get better. You won't be pregnant forever.lol ( :"

starfire978 replied: "Yup I'm right where you are and my doc told me yesterday to take ranitidine tablets. it's the generic of zantax (sp?) up to two 75 mg tablets twice a day. And let me tell you just taking one has helped soooo much. call your doc and ask if this is something he is okay with you taking :)"

Dylan B replied: "i used to get it everyday around the same time. i would go crazy trying to hunt down anything to eat or drink to settle it. they're medication and over the counter meds for you to take. try prilosak (sp). that worked for my friend. i just kept putting it off and after a few months it went away. but that probable not the best things to do. if that doen't kick it talk to the doc."

Cheech replied: "Is what you're eating the same everyday, too? Carbs are also a cause for heartburn. So, if you're eating a danish or sweet cakes everyday about the same time - - - and then getting heartburn, there's your explanation. Just the same, I would ask your doctor AND cut down on carbs for a few days and see what happens. Eat some fruit and/or veggies in place of them. Take care of yourself."

Tripp's Mommy replied: "i was having what i thought was heartburn every single day, and i took tums and it didn't help. if nothing is helping, you should talk to your dr. because it turned out i had galstones which is common in pregnancy and had to have my galbladder removed. oh, and my dr also said it was safe to use zantac during pregnancy, which helped (when i actually had heartburn). But talk to your dr to be sure!"

rodeogalinor83 replied: "I have had continus heartburn since I got pregnent, I keep tums on me at all times, and drink and extra glass or two of water a day, it helps keep the heartburn away. Unfortunetly it is just a part of being pregnent, if it is really bad and you are having issues keeping it away or hurting your sleep or tummy to much you can talk to your doc and there are some prescreptions that they can give you while pregnent that will help. Good luck and Congrats"

mystic_eye_cda replied: "It isn't that unusual during pregnancy as pregnancy dramatically changes your digestive system, for one thing food passes through the intestines more slowly -which allows more nutrients to be used however it also allows more water to be removed which can lead to constipation. Acid production has a natural rhythm to it so I am not surprised it happens to you at the same time each day. You can take calcium carbonate (tums) everyday just before that time. Or you can take papaya extract as it is supposed to help regulate acid production, many women swear by it and at reasonable levels it can't do any harm. Generally it comes in chewable tablets and is available at most health food stores and some pet stores (it is good for bunny rabbits digestion too *lol*)"

frostedbetty replied: "I went through a patch of heartburn which was weird since i had never had it before pregnancy. I started getting it every evening at the same time around 18 weeks and it lasted till 20-21 weeks and then out of nowhere stopped. I would have to take a tum every night when i felt it start to come on. Tumms are kinda gross but they worked for it, at least i could get some sleep :) The bonus is the heartburn hasnt come back! So maybe like me you will just go through a stage of it. My doctor says lots of pregnancy symptoms come and go, and to just wait it out and maybe next week it wont be there anymore. Good luck!"

Casi's Momma replied: "i had heart burn from about the same time as you during labor up until i gave birth...never had it before and havent had it once since she was born...maybe the old wives tale about heart burn = hair because my little girl has plenty! try papaya tablets they work wonders you can find them at the vitamin store good luck and congrats"
