About Lamictal Memory Loss in Q&A
Does Lamictal cause extreme weight loss or memory loss over the years? I've been taking it for two years and lost 30 pounds over those years. I can't gain weight. And my memory is pretty terrible (haha- but I don't know how long it's been that way because I can't remember!) So has anyone taken Lamictal for several years and noticed any of these symptoms (weight loss or memory loss or inability to concentrate)? I am 22 years old 5'2 weighed 130 and now weigh 100.

Atma replied: "My husband has taken Lamictal for about four years without any weight or memory loss. I suggest that you speak with your psychiatrist about what's going on. Perhaps there's something else causing your problem; if not, the doctor should evaluate whether Lamictal is the best medication for you. Take care of yourself!"

Lamictal side effects, vision and memory loss anyone? I have been on lamictal for about three years or so now. I have had blurred vision and memory loss and thought nothing of it. I have now heard that it is possible it could be from the medication, anyone have the same problem. Does it take a while to wean off the drug.

bug replied: "I don't really know that answer yet. My daughter (just started) on this medicine and the only thing I find is that she has the memory loss. Checl out this website. Good Luck!"

susan replied: "yes my daughter has the same problem she went from honor roll to almost flunking out she has no night vision and hurts alot in her back she has went from 200 mg down to 50 mg and seems to feel better but please do it under doctors care if you decide to quit because it can cause seizures even if you have never had one"

Memory loss associated with Cymbalta and Lamictal? I'm 21 and I've taken a number of anti-depressants over 6 years (Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac...) They would begin to work but with time they stopped. I had always been diagnosed with depression and OCD but 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Bipolar (taking 120mg of Cymbalta & 400mg of Lamictal). This was the first time I felt free of mental illness! Through my dr I'm working my way off Cymbalta since last month (down to 60mg daily). My question to those who have been taking either of these medicines-have you experienced memory loss? This is not listed on the side effect descriptions and drs say its just from depression. But I've suffered from so many highs and lows of mental illness and have been on many different meds but I have NEVER experienced this problem of BOTH short and long-term memory loss! With any medication I never really experience side effects besides sleepiness. I was wondering if anyone suffered from memory loss from medication and was no longer a problem when off it?

Gard23 replied: "Memory loss/short-term memory deficits are standard withdrawal symptoms associated with the SSRI and SNRI antidepressants (checklist below, for your information). So if your memory issues have begun or worsened since the start of your cymbalta taper, that may be the answer. The SSRI and SNRI antidepressants can also cause memory problems during normal use - people report this anecdotally."

Is there a link between memory loss and Bipolar Disorder? I'm Bipolar II and ever since my BP "crash" my memory has gone down the tubes. I'm only 26 and I take Lamictal. I forget names, numbers and directions INSTANTLY, but I never did before. Is it just me or is there a connection? How can I counteract this?

HaHa I Win replied: "I have Bipolar II also but I don't seem to have this problem. Did you look up the side affects for Lamictal? It's probably just a side affect."

Lila replied: "Bi-Polar Disease can cause a lack of concentration. This can cause you to be unable to remember what you read, hear. It can cause a problem while reading leaving you sometimes with the inability to remember what you have just read. I always make a habit of keeping a small notebood in my purse and one nearby at home so that I can immediately write down phone numbers, directions and have this as a reminder. Especially with phone numbers I make certain that if it is an important number that I may need again in the future I make a habit of immediately adding it to my personal phone book. There are ways you can help yourself to have the information that you need. I know it is a pain in the neck but this really helps and doesn't leave you in the lurch or lost when you need the information. I am sorry that you suffer with the Bi-Polar Disease!"

Ms Cat replied: "It's the Lamictal........ I'm on it to and can't remember names, how to tie my shoes, etc..... everyone I've talked to on the Lamictal has the same problem. I Carry an organizer and write down everything....... Literally, anythign I will need to know 5 minutes from "now" I write down. And I bought slip on shoes......."

Can the drug abilify cause memory loss? i am on the drug abilify and have been for a few months now, and recently, without any changes in medication, i have been experiencing some short term memory loss. does anyone know if this drug can do this, i am also on lamictal, and provigil! Thank you!

synergistic_insight replied: "Yes, according to the drug info at Rxlist.com, there is an infrequent chance of getting impaired memory."

Strange question... replied: "I'm sorry, could you repeat that question? I seem to have forgotten...If you have questions about your meds, PLEASE talk to your doctor, and not to the bunch of us idiots for medical advice!"

Uncle John replied: "Any drug can, and drug caused memory loss and/or suppression is mentally unhealthy and very bad! You could even call it, gradual suicide."

rfamilymember replied: "highly likely and certainly possible"

von replied: "I'm on abilify have been for 6 months I don't have any side effects from it. No I don't have any memory lose at all. All medicine effects everyone differently. I'd talk to your doctor about it. If you are having that type of side effect he should take you off from it. Good Luck! Hugs!"

Zyprexa and memory loss? I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, PTSD, agoraphobia and OCD. At times, I have extreme panic attacks as well. I take 50mg of Luvox for depression and anxiety. I also take 200mg of Lamictal daily as a mood stabilizer. Every time that I go over 50mg of Luvox I have extreme muscle spasms so it has been impossible to move up to the dosage the doctor knows that I need. One week ago he added 5mg of Zyprexa to be taken along with my Lamictal and Luvox...Suddenly I have SERIOUS short term memory loss. I'll go into a room to grab something and literally almost every time I forget what I went for. I've read some of the side effects and find that short term memory loss is a side effect...but is anyone familiar enough with this medication to know if this is an initial side effect that will pass as the medication enters my system? My memory is certainly something I don't want to screw around with. Thanks in advance.

boss replied: "I have taken zyprexa I found that it caused me to forget little things as well over time as the medication gets into your this side effect should go away if it does not go away in a few weeks inform your Doctor. Good Luck!"

lovelorn replied: "I am on Zyprexa and I don't have that side effect. It may be the combination of the pills that you are taking that is doing it. Each person responds differently to medication - if it is an ongoing problem speak to the doctor."

what is the matter with me? i woke up with memory loss and bitten tongue.? i will call doc monday. i seemed to have had a seizure; probably when i ran out of lamictal. the thing is my senses (vision etc.) are better. i just cannot remember much since last thursday. and everything seems different. i am a little scared.

Daaling! replied: "go to the ER! why wait a full day?"

Digger replied: "Just hang on until you seethe Doctor,if symptoms get worse get along to the ER ASAP.Try and relax,it's hard I know but until you get a medical assessment, that's about all i can advise."

PAUL replied: "That sounds interesting! Maybe you were abducted or drugged... I sense foul play. Don't listen to me though, I'm just rambling..."

wrgmama replied: "It sounds like you may have had a grand mal seizure, which is a mini stroke. You need to go to the doctore ASAP, as once you have had one stroke, it is easier for you to have another. Also, strokes sometimes lead to blood clots which can be deadly. Blood clots are not instant either, they can hang around for months until they pop."

My EEG shows abnormal results in the left side of my brain. I get dizzy and have loss of time episodes? I often feel like I am outside of myself looking in. at times, I fog out at work or home and can't concentrate. My neurologist originally thought a siezure disorder or possibly complicated migraines. As of late, my eyes are more sensitive to light and I often have a dull headache. My biggest concern is the time loss episodes where I have no memory. I lost 3 exits on the Hwy driving last week. It scared the crap out of me. I have been on Topamax for over a year, and it kept it under control, but now I have more bad days than good. My doctor is weaning me onto Lamictal, and will slowly wean me off Topamax. I am simply scared and feel like I have lost control of my life. Please help me.

mlgable replied: "What ever you do don't drive any distance at all. You are a danger to yourself and the others on the road so have someone take over driving you places until you get this under control. If you have an accident full well knowing you have this condition they will hold you liable. Safety first until you get this controlled again. Hand the keys to someone else or call a cab."

barrbou214 replied: "we here cannot diagnose the problem here because we don't have the means to your medical records including the brain scans. was a mri done? my suggestion is that you don't drive until this problem is resolved before you hurt someone else and not even know it. good luck and godspeed."

healthnfreedom2 replied: "Seizures are not always Epilepsy and can be caused by many other health problems. And yes Migraine and Epilepsy are interrelated in various ways.Neurological clinics have noted that Epilepsy and Migraine can masquerade as each other, and in patients with Epilepsy or Migraine whose condition seems unclear, consideration of the other disorder may be warranted. Both Migraine and Epilepsy react to environmental triggers. These Triggers can be a big factor in avoiding either of these episodes. Keep a Diary so that your Neuro has some related points. Check your Triggers. Ask for another opinion , or a 3rd opinion. Do your research on seizures, there are many good and trusted sites on the internet. Ask questions, ask questions, ask questions."

Victoria S replied: "While your doctor can help you sift through the medical side, you may wish to begin providing your body with the raw materials (i.e. nutrition) to activate self healing mechanisms. Below are some links to begin learning, including links with testimonies. I urge you to learn more. I have a seizure disorder myself, and have improved my quality of life significantly with the following nutritonal products: Advanced Ambrotose Liquid Vitamins (in mega doses) In Liven - which is a broad spectrum probiotic that has 20 amino acids in it, which are invaluable for brain health Krill Oil - also valuable for brain health, as our brains are made up of a good percentage of fat NCD - liquid zeolites to detoxify the body quickly, including the brain Best of luck to you!!"

From Prozac and Lamictal to 5HTP, Good Idea or not??? I am Bi-Polar. I have been on several different meds over the last couple of years. I am currently taking Prozac for depression and Lamictal to stabalize my mood. I already get headaches and these meds seem to be making it worse. I have been on Lamictal since Dec 2006 and Prozac since Oct of 2006. It seems as though my memory loss is getting worse as time goes on and wonder if it is the meds. I heard about 5HTP and am reading a book about it. I am seriously thinking of stopping my meds and trying it out. Of course my Dr.'s say there is not enough info on it. But I just want to feel normal again. I am tired of the suicidal thoughts and feeling anguished all the time and knowing that there is no reason for it. I have talked to my Dr about the suicidal thoughts and he says that it is normal and for now we will just "wait and see". This seems risky to me. I've heard sooo many good things about 5HTP.....I'd like a public opion. Thanks Some of the symptoms that I am experiencing have been lingering since I first started the meds. Other symptoms have been developing over the last couple of months. For instance the memory loss. I noticed that I was becoming a little abscent minded, but now I can forget things as I am trying to speak them. Or I'll think of something that needs to be done and immediately forget it and then get frustrated because it pops back in my mind hours later. As for therapy, I have not done any group therapy, but I have been seeing a therapist one on one for more than a year. She was actually the person who sent me to my Dr to get meds because my situation was getting worse. I have no intention of just stopping my meds cold turkey....I know it is a step by step process and I probably should have stated that, I just wanted to know if anyone has tried 5HTP after traditional meds and I am interested in others opions of it. By the way 5HTP is Short for 5 Hyroxytryptophan.

Dust in the Wind replied: "Short of going off your meds (and do not do that without doctor supervision, you must be weaned off) and trying an unproven and unapproved treatment I would advise you to get a second opinion. Wait and see should have been over months ago for you hun. There is NEW thought on bipolar disorder that may counter indicate the use of antidepressants. The fact that you are still experiencing this level of discomfort after 6 months of medication bothers me a lot. Consider, if you can, some therapy and group therapy to go along with your medication. Half the battle is knowing you are not alone. Dusty"
