Could I take Prozac during the day and Mirtazapine at night to sleep? Prozac helps my mood during the day but when I use it I have difficulty sleeping at night. Could I use Mirtazapine at night to help me sleep and Prozac during the day for my mood? My doctor prescribed me some but I am waiting for the week end to try it.

Seo replied: "I really wouldn't advise it as it may cause what's known as "Serotonin Syndrome" due to the combination of two anti-depressant drugs that both work on Serotonin. I'm on Mirtazapine and indeed, it does help you to sleep, but i'm almost certain if you speak to your doctor that he/she would recommend either switching the Prozac to another similar alternative to help with the insomnia side-effect of it, or just keep you on Mirtazapine on its own. Failing that, I s'pose if you were happy with the Prozac apart from the sleep problem. they may keep you on that and prescribe a sedative or sleeping tablet like Zopiclone to help you get off to sleep, but that's so addictive. I'm sure it's the Prozac that's preventing you from sleeping so, personally, I would say your best option is to get off the Prozac and move over to something else. SSRI's as you probably know generally cause insomnia, and other dreadful things like Nausea/Vomiting/Diarrhea etc."

do you think PROZAC is better than Mirtazapine or Lamotrigine? why it is beter to consult a lady psychiatrist than male?

Travis W replied: "e"

Fizzy replied: "lady is more sensitive to people in how our society sees it. That's life. Doesnt mean better though, but they can comfort you more. i think both these chemical man made meds are the same... Fiz"

Scott the Sexy Scout replied: "I've never tried Lamotrigine, so it's a toss up between Prozac and Mirtazapine. I'd choose Mirtazapine because Prozac caused me to develop suicidal behavior. Mirtazapine just makes you fat."

psyadv replied: "Prozac and Mirtazapine both are good drugs and both are antidepressants but of different families of drugs. Both drugs have same action but the route of mechanisms are different. In choosing any of the antidepressant a psychiatrist see what will suit his patient the best. For example, common side effect of Mirtazepine is constipation but patient improves with mirtazepine and he is comfortable with this side effect than doctor will not change his medicine and tell the patient for few changes in his lifestyle which will improve the problem of constipation. So, in short both drugs are notorious for their action but you have to see with which medicine you improve. We will only say that the drug is not working if it has been tried for at least 4-6 weeks in complete dosages. Lamotrigene is a mood stabilizer and it augments (boost the effect) the effect of antidepressants. If used alone it will not improve the symptoms to normal. Choosing a psychiatrist male or female do not make any difference. What matters is, You should be comfortable to explain your problem to your psychiatrist and rest is the clinical acumen of the doctor."

has anyone taken mirtazapine with positive results ? am changing from prozac to mirtazapine .... after years of taking prozac ..

MrBookie replied: "Everyone reacts differently to anti-depressant medication. My wife took mirtazapine (zispin) for about 3 months and gained over two stone in weight which made her even more depressed so had to change. Keep trying diferent anti-depressants until you find the one that is suitable to you. As soon as you have bad side affects, change."

Iria replied: "I have. I actually take Prozac AND Mirtazapine. I was on just Prozac for months before and I suspected it was still leaving me too low but didnt have anything to compare it to as it was the first anti-depressant I'd been on. A shrink prescribed me Mirtazapine as a trial because of it's sedative effects (I was having problems sleeping) and my mood has lifted a lot and is much more balanced. Apparently Mirtazapine can help other anti-depressants to work better as well as working in it's own right. Hope Mirtazapine helps you. I would say to watch out for the increased appetite, as it effects 1 in 10 people. I experienced and would suddenly get really strong hunger pangs without warning. It passed after a couple of weeks though."

People with borderline personality disorder, what meds are you on? I'm on the anti-depressants Prozac and Mirtazapine which mainly relieves the symptoms of my depression, but I know some people with BPD are on anti-psychotics. What are you on, and would you say its made a big improvement for you? What are the "symptoms" of your BPD that cause you most problems in your daily life. Just curious I guess as BPD is less common than some other mental health problems, and you dont come accross as much people with it. Thanks in advance :)

catdog replied: "BPD is very common. Go to for more info or search for Borderline UK on yahoo groups and chat to other people who have BPD. Therapy is the main treatment for BPD and medications such as anti-depressants, mood stabilisers (e.g. carbamazapine, sodium valproate, lamotrigine) and anti-psychotics may also be used to help with mood instability. The anti-psychotics I have heard people who have BPD have been on are chlorpromazine, quetiapine and abilify. A lot of people have low doses of anti-psychotics and it helps them. I had BPD, I have now moved on, and I've been on various mood stabilisers and anti-psychotics to help with my mood swings which was my main problem along with self-harm. Anti-psychotics help me with the agitation and urges to self-harm. The medication you take depends on your own symptoms. I'm on higher doses of medication now because I have a mood disorder and so medication is the main treatment for me."

Sally replied: "I have suffered with BPD for many years, and I dont take anything for it, I have took every medication under the sun and i have been suicidle throughout them all, please try an alternitive to medication, a nice long walk, some excercise, something you enjoy, it has helped me, and the best cure is fun and laughter, find something you enjoy and embrace it,,,happiness is the best medication in the world"

Has anyone else experienced feeling numb while on anti-depressants? I take Prozac 40mg and Mirtazapine 45mg. Since I started on Mirtazapine my mood has really balanced out a *lot*, and I've noticed a bigger improvement to my depression compared to when I was just on Prozac. Sometimes I feel a bit "numb" though, and like I dont react properly to things, like the anti-depressants are blocking out other emoticions too. Has anyone else felt like this?

agactual replied: "Yeah, that is common. From what i understand, you aren't actually emotionally numb. It is that when you were depressed, you become used to being emotionally unstable (for lack of a better word). Basically, you became hypersensitive to little things, much more sensitive than you should have been. Right now, you are probably aren't anymore "numb" than the average person but when comparing your current emotional reactivity to your state before you took meds, it seems a lot different. Comparatively you may feel numb but in actuality, that is how you are supposed to feel and that how most people feel. You just need to get used to it."

probablygraham replied: "I'll let you into a little secret - that's EXACTLY what anti-depressants are designed to do."

CRAVING 4 SUNSHINE ! replied: "if possible get of them prozac as soon as possible. in the future they will be banned."

fire_walk_with_me@ymail.com replied: "Yeah, i was used to feeling extremes and when i couldn't i felt kind of trapped. That was at first anyway and then they just made me crawl out of my skin."

Scott L replied: "Yep, you bet. There are some things that happen these days, that frankly I don't even care about. Been fired a few times and walked away feeling pretty good too. Could have been the drugs, or just the crap job. Don't know for sure...and don't care. I just feel better most of the time."

munki replied: "Yes-I have felt like that a lot, in a way you become 'cold'..you don't feel anything at all... you go into a kind of autopilot and are functioning but as for anything else you just don't give a damn."

anti depressant help, please read. mirtazapine? hi, i need some advice and to give you a better understanding will giveyou some background information and my symptoms as well. i was on 60 mg fluoexetine (prozac) for about 3 months but have been changed to 45mg mirtazapine (Zispin) because the prozac wasn't helping me. the problem is that the new stuff, Zispin seems to have very strange and unpleasant side effects which i will tell you about. firstly i was weaned off the prozac over the space of two weeks, then took nothing for one week and started taking the mirtazapine (zispin) last friday starting with 15mg at night. i will give symptoms and dosages per day now and hope that you might be able to help or give advice: Friday: 15mg at bedtime, no sideeffects. Saturday: 15mg at bedtime, felt a bit groggy during the day. Sunday: 30mg at bedtime, felt sick and very faint during the day, groggy as if i hadn't slept the night before. Monday: 30mg at bedtime. skin on face feels numb all day, feeling sick for a while and very tired. Tuesday: 30mg at bedtime, skin on face and body feels numb all day, still feel sick ad totally knackered as if i haven't slept or as if i was coming down with a cold. Wednesday: 45mg at bedtime. skin on entire body feel numb. very groggy all day and feel a bit sick. Thursday (today): haven't taken my dose yet, entire body and tongue feel numb and kind of itchy at the same time, feeling groggy but very agitated at the same time. was at my appointment this morning and told doctor about all symptoms and he put me back on 30mg at bedtime for one week. but the side effects are incredibly unpleasant and i don't think i will take my dose tonight. please let me know if you have also taken this medicine and had these side effects and how long did they last if you continue to take the meds or did you stop taking the meds and how long after you stopped did the side effects disappear? please help. this is supposed to be a anti-depressant but these effects are making me feel even worse. i know that it takes anti-depressants some time to work and that they can make you feel worse for a short time but it's the physical side effects that are getting me down, not my mental state. please answer, and sorry if this was really long, but i had to get as much detail into the question as possible to get good answers. thanks if you took the time to read it

Experiences of Mirtazapine? About 2 weeks ago I was put on Mirtazapine (30mg) I already take Prozac but the dr said it would hopefully help me sleep as well as the anti-depressant properties. It hasnt helped with my sleep, I've heard that the lower dose is more sedating??? The first few days on it I felt really dizzy and floaty. I guess its too soon for it to be working fully. How have you found it?

bananafish6726 replied: "I took it a few years ago for about 6 months. It was one of the more effective anti-depressants I have tried. It was sedating and helped me fall asleep sooner at bedtime. Other than that, I had no remarkable effects. Another drug that helps with insomnia at bedtime is trazodone. You might ask your doctor about that."

Hopefully Helpful replied: "I took Mirtazapine/Remeron to help me sleep. You may need to have the dose increased. I was taking 60mg at bedtime. It stopped working as well after a few years. I now take Seroquel to help me sleep. Let your doctor know that it isn't helping you sleep. I hope once you are taking the dose that works for you, you will be feeling better. Best Wishes."

Is tiredness ALWAYS a side effect of Mirtazapine? Hi, I went to my GP today to discuss my depression and how I'm getting on with being on Prozac (40mg). I told her that I've noticed a real improvement in my mood, but I'm having real problems sleeping. She said if this side effect was going to pass it probably would have by now and that I can either stick with it or try another drug (She suggested Citalopram). From my work background I know the anti-depressant Mirtazapine is often sedating, but I'd like to know if it ALWAYS is and what people's experiences have been? My GP's given me another month to decide weather I wanna carry on with Prozac but I may ask for Mirtazapine if I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone??? Thanks for any replies!x

louise.pascoe replied: "Mirtazapine made me extremely sleepy.. I slept for 19 hours the first time I took it. It is most sedating at 15mg, and the anti-depressant effect works best at 30mg or 45mg."

Anne S replied: "Yes, as does Citalopram. And both are highly addictive."

gina g replied: "It made me sleep alot. I changed to efflexor er and have no complants about it. Check it out. Good luck"

Hopefully Helpful replied: "I was prescribed Mirtazapine 60 mg at bed time because it helped me sleep. Eventually it stopped working as well so I am now taking Seroquel to help me sleep. I don't think you can kill two birds with one stone because Prozac is meant to be taken in the morning and Mirtazapine before bed. I hope you and your doctor can get things straightened out. Good Luck."

GlasgowGirl replied: "Hi luv, I was on Mirtazapine for 3 days and all I did was sleep! I took it at night and slept from about 8pm till 10am the next day. When I eventually got up I was really drowsy, and in the afternoon I actually fell asleep sitting on the couch while looking after my toddler!!! I only fell asleep for about 10 mins but it was enough to make me chuck them in the bin, although for those 3 nights it was the best sleep I ever had. I also found the tablets made me really hungry, all I wanted to do was lie on the couch with the duvet eating junk!!! I have problems sleeping with fluoxetine aswell, but I need to be alert during the day so I find them best. Ive never had citalopram, I've had escitalopram, buy only 5mg though so I didn't get too many side effects but I don't think it was too effective either. Let me know how you get on."

dixibellxxx replied: "I am on 45mg of mirtazipine!! and i suffer with severe depression and have done 4 yrs but i would'nt be without my mirtazipine they have made my life so much more bearable now.I also take prozac and was on prozac b4 i used mirtazipine and they did help me but no where near as much as the mirtazipine!! you will get over the tirdness and start 2 feel better i hope, every 1 is different so wot might work 4 me might not 4u but i hope it does goodluckxxxx"

Changing from prozac to Mirtazpine? i need a little help? i was on prozac for 3 weeks just and had bad side affects, so my doctor changed me to mirtazapine can i take them straight away or do i need to leave it a couple of days before i start them? my doctor never told me? any help would b great thanks pamela xxx

Pastor replied: "You need to call the doctor. It shouldn't be a problem to take them right away (I am not a doctor though) but if you had an allergic reaction there may be special instructions. If you can't reach your doctor call a pharmacist, they would know. Good luck."

Herself, that Hermit replied: "Start taking it now, it's best not to leave a gap between meds, your head will get all weird. Follow the doctor's instructions (if he gave any) and I'm guessing those would be taper off the prozac (if you're still on it) and start the full dose of the mirtazapine at the same time. The two meds can be taken together safely, I've done it myself. There may be a little mental rockiness or wooziness for a couple of days (it might even be fun) but don't worry about it. I'm on mirtazapine right now, I love love love the stuff, congratulations on a good pick for meds. [Heads up though, Mirtazapine knocks you out something fierce the first few days. Also, half a pill makes you twice as tired for some reason so don't try that]"

Weirdo Beardo replied: "Sack Mirtazapine. I get horrible side effects with it including terrible night time headaches. These drugs are all about sales and profits for the huge pharmaceutical companies in which I believe dioctors have vested interests. I have a cupboard full of Mirtazapine and wont take them. My GP is in for a (another) huge bollocking on Monday. The stupid twat prescribed me Zopiclone on a repeat prescription when it is only licenced for very short term use and is very addictive. Time for the lawyers !"

chaddrake1997 replied: "I would wait just a few days than switch. That way the Prozac gets out of your body completely. Than go back to your normal routine. If you continue to have side effects with Mirtazpine, don't worry, they will go away eventually."

experiences with Zispin (MIRTAZAPINE) anyone? i was on prozac 60mg, 1mg rivotril and xanax as needed for about a year but have been weaned off those for the past 2 weeks and am starting mirtazipine from tomorrow, 15 mg for 2 days, 30 for another 2 days and then 45mg from then onward. the prozac had no effect on my depression and didn't help with my eating disorder either, if anything it got worse. i also suffer from panic attacks on a regular basis (thus the Xanax). did you find mirtazapine (zispin) better than another type of antidepressant you have been on and how well does it work for the anciety i feel pretty much all the time. any helpful comments will be welcome. thanks. ps. i see my psychiatrist every week.

Hopefully Helpful replied: "I took MIrtazapine at bedtime to help me sleep. It did help me sleep for a few years. These medications can stop working as well after a while. I am worried that if you take it during the day, it might make you feel sleepy. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor. I hope you will be feeling better. Best Wishes to you."

bone replied: "I am on mirtazapine 30mg's I don't notice it making my depression any better but I do notice it makes me sleep well at night."

Iria replied: "As I'm sure you know anti-depressants effect everyone differently, so my experience is unlikely to be the same as yours or someone elses. I was on Prozac (40mg) for several months before I was put onto Mirtazapine (originally 30mg then increased to 45mg), which I now take as well as Prozac. I suspected Prozac was still leaving me too low, but as it was the first anti-depressant I tried I didnt have anything to compare it to. Mirtazapine has helped me a lot though and balanced out my mood, I dont sink to the lows that I did before which would lead to me feeling suicidal as the pain was just too intense. Dont expect too much from medication. Seeing your psychiatrist and engaging in therapy will help you to change your negative ways of thinking. Good luck."
