Top Questions and Answers
Has anyone experienced the effects of Ambien - that is, if you stay up once it's kicked in? Isn't this just crazy stuff? I've experienced changes in colors, lighting, and my face (and those of my cats) have looked distorted, like in the movie Jacob's Ladder. Why do psychiatrists and the drug companies downplay (or seem unaware) of these effects? Rare? Everyone I've talked to said the same thing about Ambien. It doubles as a recreational drug.

Carl D replied: "Well you should tell your psychiatrist about this so you can get a new medication. All medications have side-effects, and you need to tell someone if they become serious."

xo379 replied: "Yes. I've also experienced just...this intense desire to TALK, to be active, and I feel kind of gleeful. It can be abused quite easily because of this--it's called 'Ambo-tripping'...so you really need to be careful. Psychiatrists hope that you'll take it as it is prescribed--ie. take it and go to bed, not stay up and (essentially) abuse it. But there *have* been numerous articles and warnings about these side effects of Ambien. Doctors--and drug companies--are definitely aware of this."

Andy C replied: "Different drugs have different effects on different people. Talk to your prescribing doctor about your side-effects. Ambien is well documented to have several side-effects. Most include sleep walking, sleep driving, and eating with no memory of eating."

Mina replied: "All drugs, not simply psychiatric medication, come with a risk of side effects. Have you ever read the side of a Tylenol bottle? These side effects are not "unknown" or "downplayed", they're just extremely rare, that is if what you experienced is actually due to the Ambien. I'm much more inclined to believe that you were actually sleeping when you saw these things, because any drug that makes you sleep more deeply can make you have vivid or disturbing dreams, because you're actually in R.E.M. sleep for the period of time that you should be. Side effects of all medications are required by law to be printed on the packaging, and when you get prescriptions from a pharmacy they always give you a pamphlet that you are expected to read which outlines the dosage instructions and side effects of the medication. Edit: If people are using it as a recreational drug then they deserve everything they get for abusing it. It's meant to help people with insomnia, not let you get high."

Ms Cat replied: "Aren't you the guy who believes the psychiatric and drug industries are a bunch of bull........ Aren't you the one that said psychiatric drugs are no more effective than placebos....... Yet here you are using psychotropic drugs recreationally.... then complaining about the psychiatric industry...."

How long does ambien stay in system? i have very important job interview and i need to know when this be out of my system...thankyou

Az R replied: "It's functional for approximately 6 hours in your system, I assume you're asking about a urine test. The answer is, no one knows. It hasn't been studied. However, no one on the face of the planet casually tests for ambien. There is no chemical test for it, so a drug screen that includes ambien must be specifically requested and the presence of it or its metabolites tested by GC/MS. I'll also note that if you've been prescribed ambien by a doctor, they can't hold a medical condition or treatment for it against you for hiring purposes unless it's in a specific class where the substance could interfere with your ability to safely and effectively do a job."

If I take a 10mg ambien and stay awake will I get anmesia and have to hide my car keys? Will I say stupid things if my girlfriend calls me or will it just be a pleasant experience?

Troy replied: "The answer depends on a few things. Some people do have VERY strange reactions to ambien. cases of sleepwalking, urinating in the sink/oven, driving places, shopping, lots of people EAT.. alot... even read an article where a guy mowed his yard, drove to an old girlfriends house. cheated on his wife with her.. then came back and went to sleep and woke with no recollection of the events.. but those reactions are defiantly not the norm. I personally take ambien and have no strange reactions. Just blessedly wonder full sleep and occasionally vivid dreams. but staying awake? thats hard to do.. most people fall asleep pretty quickly when taking this medication. I've forced myself to stay awake to accomplish something before going to bed.. but i felt a little nauseated drunk while fighting its effects.. much easier to give in and just go to sleep. Its not a drug that gives any kind of high.. and its pretty strong.. i'd recommend climbing into bed and taking the pill then because the effects come pretty quickly. But if you have never taken ambien before.. hiding the keys might be a good idea :) just in case"

What's the longest you've been able to stay awake after taking an Ambien? I just took one 5 mins ago cuz it's almost bedtime and I don't feel tired. I'm wondering if you've ever tried to stay awake and how you felt after an hour or so.

popeyethesadist replied: "I've seen people carry on conversations with dead relatives after staying awake a few hours. It's not hard to stay awake after taking, It's hard to stay sane."

claire b replied: "When I had eye surgery they prescribed that... I took one when I got home & they said if you don't fall asleep w/in an hour to take another- so I took another 45 mins later... 4 hrs later I was still up but sitting w/ my eyes closed b/c they hurt so bad. My roommate called the doctors office & they told her to give me 2 more--- took those and fell asleep about 3 hours later. I have a high tolerance for drugs though-- if one doesn't get you to bed in an hr, then you probably can take another-- but I wouldn't do more than that unless you call your dr. I find Benedryl works better, honestly. I had Ambien CR- which might make a difference too b/c it's control release."

Catherine E: VT replied: "I've been *able* to stay awake for as long as I want to, Ambien isn't something that knocked me out, but it helps put me to sleep when I do finally lay down, and helps me stay asleep. I think the longest I went awake after taking the pill was about two hours. After an hour or so, I felt like I was drunk. My husband was home, and he described my behavior as being similar to someone who's had too much to drink. My words were slurry, I was having trouble keeping my balance. I didn't do anything weird or unusual, though. My memories of those two hours are sketchy. Some people will get outright amnesia."

hertzbread replied: "I took 30 mg of Ambien and I did not fall asleep... I was tripping balls and don't really remember much of it, other than that I was at Grand Central Station and I kept on whispering to my friends about a woman that wasn't there."

Freddie replied: "Catherine's experience mirrors my own very closely."
