What could cause unexplained weight loss? I am a 19 year old girl and have lost 40 pounds since december without trying. I weighed 155 then and now weigh 115. Ive been getting weaker and weaker but eat a ton and there is no reason for me to be losing more weight. i have not changed my lifestyle at all, im not stress out either. but i cannot continue to lose more. ive been to the doctor and had a ton of bloodwork done. does anyone have an idea why i am still losing weight? all my blood work came back normal, doctor doesnt know what is wrong

souljaboy_tellem replied: "Have you been on a diet latley."

emouse1974 replied: "Parasites Cancer Several Gastro intestinal disorders Immune system deficiency Immune system hyperactivity The question would be: "What did and didn't they test you for?""

Vey Hawt replied: "If you find out the reason... let me know.. i need to lose weight..."

Sarah N replied: "I was in a very similar situation. I lost about 22 pounds and I thought I wasn't trying. If your bloodtests have come back clear (mine did also) than maybe you need to look at what you are eating. I was convinced I was eating heaps and most of my family thought my eating was fine. But it turned out that I had an eating disorder. Although I was still eating I was SUBCONSCIOUSLY (i didn't realise what i was doing) obsessing over what I ate and each day i was cutting out more fat and more carbs than the day before. My family just thought i was very healthy but they didn't realise what was going on inside my head. It may not be relevant to your situation but I was in a VERY similar mindset to you but I wouldn't accept the possibility of an eating disorder. I hope this helps and if it's not relevant to your situation than I really hope you find what the problem is."

What can cause unexplained weight loss? What can you do to put it back on? My husband is 5'9" tall, and has been loosing weight for the last couple of years. He is down to 107 pounds. His doctor has run all kinds of tests and can not figure out what is causing it. We have tried the high carbohidrate drink powder that .you get at the health food stores. He drinks Boost, eats ice cream, cookies, etc., and still does not gain weight. The more he eats the more he moves his bowels. The food just seems to pass right through him, if he looses any more he is going to be nothing but a sceletin covered by flesh. He has no energy, and is very sleepy. Can anyone make suggestions for what we should try, or tests that could maybe identify what is wrong?

WiserAngel replied: "Had he been tested for hyperthyroid? That would be my first guess."

cowboy_lil_texas replied: "to gain it back "live hard eat lots and drink mutch" as far as wats causing it i have no idea. also dont eat any thing healthy or low fat. baisicly eat like you did when you were a kid , and drink like you did in highschool. kid-candy teen-beer"

HoodRat replied: "I agree "hyperthyroid" would be my first guess as well, have they checked for cancer? Cancer can lead to rapid weight loss as well. If you has loose bowels, and cannot keep anything in, there could be a viral or bacterial infection in the intestines causing it. I would say get a second oppinion from another doctor. Good luck."

Diva replied: "May I suggest a book? "Patient Heal Thyself" by Dr. Jordan Rubin. He had a similar experience. Cannot remember the name of the condition at this point. He had an amazing ordeal though and finally came back to good health. He saw doctors around the world trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Symptoms sound familiar to your husband's. Check it out as soon as you can because maybe then you can make your doctor aware of what to look for. Mention the book to your doctor and see if he's heard of it. Try this website to see an excerpt from the book and see if you see anything familiar to your husband's condition Hope the info has helped. All the best."

Imagination replied: "There are many possibilities. First of all, if food seems to pass right through the body, it means that there may be endocrine problems that prevent his body from absorbing the nutrients. For example, a hyperthyroid patient can eat and have bowel movement right after he eats and as many times a day as he eats. Hyperthyroid patients lose weight dramatically despite that fact that they eat enormous amount of food. The problem is that those patients cannot absorb efficiently. Second of all, the type food your husband eats is low in nutrient dense materials. In other words, he needs to eat more nutritious food high in protein and essential vitamins. Instead of eating a lot of sugar and fats, he needs to eat more protein to build muscles. As we know, muscles weight more than fat. In addition, exercise should be coupled with eating more nutritious food. That is because exercise increase a person's appetite and makes it easier for a person to absorb the right nutrients. One more thing to be concerned with unexplained weight loss is that a person may be developing cancer but not yet being able to be detected by the current diagnostic methods. Most cancers are only diagnosed in the late stages. However, eating healthy and exercise may reverse or prevent cancer from developing. There have been cases that people overcome cancer or eliminate cancer by eating healthy and exercise even after they have been diagnosed."

What could be cause of an unexplained weight loss? Have lost about 10 pounds in last month but have not made any changes to diet or lifestyle.

six_toes2003 replied: "are you diabetic? without insulin, your body uses fat stores for energy. I'm simply asking about diabetes because your question is in this section. Unfortunately, HIV and cancer also cause people to lose weight."

kippertothecup replied: "I was diagnosed with type 1 on thursday. I'll tell you that I lost 7 pounds in 1 month because of the diabetes, it doesn't seem like a lot but I was at 135 to begin with so to go down to 128 was a big deal as now I'm considered underweight. It could be a lot of other things too, but talk to your doctor!"

Unexplained weight loss cause? Two infections and reduction in salt and alcohol..? I have lost 10 pounds..I had a pretty bad boil that was surgically lanced back in mid May and was treated with Bactrim (2days until allergic reaction). Lab test showed small amount of blood in urine. Then I came up with abdominal pain in 3rd week of June and was diagnosed with a kidney/bladder infection. Lab test showed pus in urine.I took Levaquin a couple days before switching to Amox-K 875 2x a day. I look like I have had about 20 lbs sucked of of me. I am a obese women so it has been quite noticeable. Note. I cut back on salt and alcohol almost in half. Could the combination of infections, frequent urination and lowered calorie and salt intake be the reasoning for the weight loss or am I sick with something else. The only symptom I am having is the weight loss.

toni replied: "cutting down on salt (which let our body retain water), lower calorie intake & frequent visits to the bathroom to drain your bladder, can be the reasons to your weight loss. noticed when you cut down on your salt intake, your fingers & toes seemed smaller? (on width that is) that's because we get bloated if we have too much salt intake.it's a given that when we cut down on our calorie intake, we'll lose weight (a common advice to people who wants to lose weight). the frequent urination on the other hand, I read it somewhere that some people take a high blood pressure pill to lose weight (they call it "piss pill"), if we kept on releasing the fluid in our body & we won't replenish it, we become dehydrated & dehydration can suck the weight out of you, big time! But, I'm not a doctor or anything, I just got all my knowledge from reading. So, if you're really concerned, the best thing is, talk to your doctor. Good Luck!"

unexplained weight loss of 12 pounds in 3 months....? 3 Months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, so now I eat NO sugar. I started taking Zoloft 2 months ago, and my thyroid test come back a little off. Which one or do ya think all of these can cause my unexplained weight loss b/c I have weighed this amount in like 11 years, now I am trying not to worry myself before I go to the doc.

Sammy Jo replied: "definately diabetes because I lost 15 pounds is one month when i was diagnosed with it."

Luv2Cook replied: "Has to be the diabetes. When you take control of sugar intake and limit carb intake, you will have weight loss. Your weight will get to where it needs to be soon. Are you exercising? Always good for Diabetes type 2. My Dad and brother are both type 2 - mainly a result of genetics and being overweight. Dad chooses not to lose weight, my brother went from 268 pounds to 225 in 9 months. By changing his eating habits. This product works well for type 2 diabetics. It helps blood sugar levels by blocking absorption of sugar in the intestinal tract. Anything is worth a try for better health. "

Just another human replied: "As long as you aren't underweight, you'll be fine. It's just the diabetes. If you are still concerned, go to the doctor."

What's wrong with me - Unexplained Weight Loss? Ok well over the past month I have gone from 130lbs to 110lbs, and I don't know why. I am noticeably thinner, but I'm worried about losing weight, because I was already quite skinny. I'm 5'8 btw So I was wondering what the possible causes of the weight loss could be? Thanks!

maalea96706 replied: "Have you been stressed alot? maybe your eating habits changed?? That happened to me in about a month i went from 130 to 110 and im only 5'1. so you only weighing that much and being so tall is really skinny, and prob not the healthiest."

xcrunner replied: "if ur very active and havent been eating much over the last month u cud have lost quite a bit of weight. however weight loss cud b explained by something much more serious so i wud suggest go c a doctor. if he says theres nothing really wrong with u u shud ask him to refer u to a nutritonist. good luck!!!!!"

Rachael B replied: "Well I cant tell directly from your details but it may be because of you excercising more, or eating less. Women tend to do that when they are stressed or are not craving anything. Maybe your metabolism went up with a growth spurt or something connected to medication being taken."

mocatz1 replied: "There are a number of medical reasons as to why you may be losing weight and they are all quite scary. You should probably see your doctor right away for tests, especially since you are not sure why you would be losing weight. some reasons for weight loss would be diabetes, parasites, certain types of cancer"

elle replied: "You should get checked up, could be a number of things, stress maybe, better to see a doctor."

Unexplained weight loss? I recently found out I was gluten intolerant. I was not diagnosed but I just stopped eating all bread and gluten products and my digestive problems went away. As a result I have completely stopped eating gluten. This was a little more than a month ago. Since then, I have gone from about 164 pounds to 157.5 pounds without any exercize at all. My appetite has not changed, I still have energy, and no other changes other than a more normal digestive system. I always hear about hoe unexplained weight loss, or weight loss with no exercize is a concern. My question is, given these circumstances, should I be concerned. Would the dietary change cause the weight loss? And is this cinsidered rapid or extreme weight loss? Thank you.

Meow replied: "Yea if you don't eat carbs you lose alot of weight. Bread is a carb."

Ggggbbb replied: "faith. hope it works for you :)"

Miss Kitty replied: "It's because you cut out all of those carbs."

lisa_swarn replied: "no, you are fine....i went from 125 to 107 and had some simple blood work done and all is well"

Harry replied: "take it as a blessing"

Danielle replied: "This is nothing to be concerned about. It could just be a result of you not eating the cholesterol and grains that are in the breads and stuff. (: Take care!"

JDguy replied: "WORMS!"

joe replied: "Any change of diet can cause weight loss or gain. It just sort of throws your body off guard and your entire system is out of whack. You could've easily gained 7 pounds instead. Just keep eating enough healthy food, and you'll be fine."

Daniel L replied: "I wouldn't be worried too much.. 7 pounds is not too much. Just keep watching that scale and if it keeps going down, then I would recommend seeing a doctor. Bread does contain a lot of calories, so maybe cutting that out lowered your caloric intake to such an extent that your body, for the past month, has been in a catabolic state. Good for you though.. People should eat more fruits and vegetables."

shaelurr replied: "i think if your feeling okay you should be fine. its not really unexplained bc you know why it happened, you stopped eating gluten. if your concerned about it ask your doctor the next time you go in."

Em replied: "This isnt unexplained weight loss, your diet has changed, that is why youve lost weight and no its far from extream. 10 pounds itsnt much so no dont be concerned i went from being 8.5 stone to 6.12 in about a year without any diet change (i ate alot) or increase in exercise (my zero amount stayed at zero) that is extream weight loss. turns out i had a thyroid condition"

donna m replied: "Sounds like an expected weight loss, consistent with your diet restrictions and I wouldn't worry about it. You are smart to avoid gluten in wheat, rye, barley and oats. You will be better for it. Keep in contact with your doctor for monitoring and regular health issues. Best regards, Donna"

kgranaghan replied: "Yeah definitley the carbs. i wish i had your problem, im piling on the weight"

I have a ? replied: "I think you just explained your weight loss. Taking gluten out of your diet, you will lose weight. If you continue to lose more weight, you should be more concerned and check with your doctor to make sure you don't have any other health problems"

Debbie E - Awestruck replied: "My daughter found out she was allergic to milk and quit eating milk products and lost 30 pounds in no time at all. Now they think she has another food allergy, she is 30, never was allergic to anything in her whole life before now."

I have type 2 diabetes (diet controlled) is that a reason for my unexplained weight loss? 3 months ago I weighed 137 now I am down to 124 lbs. I have done nothing different really other then not eating or drinking sugar. Do you think this can be a cause for my unexplained weight loss I haven't weighed this amount since I was 15 and now I am 26. I have been laying around the house for 6 months due to not having a job and watching my children, I'd think I would be gaining weight b/c I get no exercise. What do you think? also i am on zoloft for about 2 months now only 25mg

Natalie replied: "I'm thinking it's the sugar!"

PJ replied: "Yes, it certainly could be. You need to go visit the doctor again and have your blood sugar tested. It could just be from cutting out sugar - but you should go get checked. Do you test your own blood sugar? If not, you should be doing that. You might need to adjust your meds. Exercise and eating right can totally REVERSE type 2 diabetes."

Jack B replied: "Sugars negative effects on the liver and kidney can cause people who do not increase calories to gain weight as well as retain alot of water. My guess is that since you cut it out of your diet, you probably lost alot of water that your body was retaining in order to help your organs dilute the sugar. Since you are no longer consuming sugar, you no longer need to retain the extra water."

Miz Lamb replied: "Are you checking your glucose levels? or just not drinking sugars? and are you doing anything about the starchy carbohydrates in your food plan or just eating them? I recommend you go see your doctor if you aren't checking your glucose levels, eating a very low carb food plan and exercising! The unexplained weight loss is NOT in control of your glucose levels!"

Ted J replied: "maybe 124 is a better weight for you."

rickyoutfield replied: "The fact that you are losing weight while on zoloft is interesting as it normally causes people to gain weight. People start becoming insulin resistant prior to becoming diabetic (diabetes is an extreme case of insulin resistance), and it is the high levels of insulin in the body that cause people to gain weight. This is why people who are type 2 diabetic and take insulin often gain even more weight. Until the high levels of insulin in their body are corrected, most people find it difficult if not impossible to lose weight. Sounds like you might have reversed the insulin resistance and gotten the cells to be insulin sensitive again. Are you also on a low carb diet? That usually helps with insulin problems."

crazyowl replied: "Yes it is quite possible that you have lost about 1lb a week if you have cut out sugar. It is also possible if your blood sugar levels are not controlled well then that might be the cause. Check your glucose levels and if they are high you need to talk to your doctor about it. It would probably help you control your diabetes if you got some exercise why not take the kids for a walk or to the park and play ball, you may even lose some more weight and may be able to control your diabetes by diet alone. Good luck and well done on the weight loss. c retired nurse/diabetic"

Oscar C replied: "Most probably, your weight loss is due to your effective diet control and on zoloft for correcting the chemical imbalance in the brain. If you feel more comfortable with 124 lbs., then why worry about it? For your peace of mind, please see a doctor for more consultations. Good luck to you and God bless."

Unexplained weight loss, is it a possibility that? Plase note: I tried this in Diet and Fitness, but only received generic spam answers. I am not trying to lose weight, so this is not an intentional result. I am hypothyroid and a type 2 diabetic. In the middle part of October of this year, I donated blood to the American Red Cross. However, before accepting a donation, they are required to check your iron level. I was 1 number away from being anemic according to the RN who was screening me. So, a few days later, I began a simple daily regimen of taking a "complete multivitamin from a to z", containing no "extra anything". It is now mid December, and my clothes are no longer fitting properly, as they are too big. I have to keep pulling my pants up when walking. My appetite has decreased somewhat, but nothing significant, I am not doing anything out of the ordinary, such as more exercise, and really have not been under any stress. So, other than taking the daily vitamin, I haven't changed any other aspect of my day to day routine. The only other thing that I would like to add is that my systolic number has climbed from 118 to 130, but diastolic has remained unchanged for the most part. Simply put, do you think that this daily multivitamin is allowing or, perhaps causing my weight loss? Please note, that my TSH is normal and so are my glucose tests (2x daily @ 90 - 110). Total weight loss is 20+ lbs.

microphon200 replied: "I would go and see a doctor."

Marcia E replied: "I had a friend that was loosing weight without even trying, if she had gone to the doctor for a check up she would still be living. I would run not walk to the doctor."
