How long does it take for Xanax to start working? I was diagnosed with TMJ caused by stress. My doctor prescribed me a pain reliever and a prescription for .5 MG of Xanax to be taken one each night before bed everyday. I have taken it for two days and haven't noticed a difference. Is this like Zoloft and other anti-depressants, and it'll take a few weeks to kick in, or is this supposed to work immediately? Thanks for any help.

Megan M replied: "xanax is not an anti-depressant. its an anti-anxiety. and yes it works immediately. probably within about 15 minutes. and it lasts for probably about 4-6 hours. so how would you know if it isn't working when you take it and go right to sleep??"

Dimage replied: "Should start working after about 15 minutes or so. I take 10mg when I need it. It is not for depression, but to relax you instead.. and you should not feel the effects the next day. I will take one if I can't sleep to help me get there."

Melissa T replied: "So the pain reliever is for the pain from the TMJ and the XANAX is for stress and maybe to help you from clenching your mouth when you get stressed. You may not feel much from taking the Xanax it may be to small a dose for you, but it is an anti anxiety medication, i have been on it for 12 years well since I was 16. For Panic attacks and I don't notice that it does much for me it just makes me not stress out and it takes my panic attacks away. It will work in 20 minutes and last anywhere from 6-8 hours. Xanax is one of the longer acting benzo's and I think works the best for short/long term relief. But you may need to take two call the doc and tell them one is not even showing effects and when you take two you will notice a but of a change you may get a bit dizzy at first or you may get sleepy, but you will feel like you are not stressed about anything at all. You may feel a bit drunk actually if you take enough of it. MLIZZA"

Is Xanax a nerve pill and a muscle relaxer? My ear doctor told me he was going to perscribe me a muscle relaxer for my TMJ because it hurt me so bad because the muscle was tightening up but he gave me Xanax. I always thought that was just a nerve pill. Is it also a muscle relaxer? He just gave me the Xanax for 2 weeks until I can get in to see a Maxilofacial surgeon. I'm suppose to take it twice a day and its the lowest MG he said.

Susan M replied: "Xanax is an anti-anxiety drug that does relax spasms. Take it as your doctor prescribed. I hope it helps you. I would suggest acupuncture for your pain, too, to see if it helps you."

idontknowitall replied: "both, like most benzo's (ativan, valium etc...) they work as a "nerve" pill but also as a muscle relaxer. just be careful because it can give you bad concentration so no driving or life altering decisions"
