Yasmin Birth Control Pills Side Effects Posts in Q&A
I am going to start Yasmin birth control pills... anybody taking these and having side effects? I am switching from ortho tri cyclen lo and am mostly concerned about losing scalp hair. My hair has been thinning on top for a couple of years and I don't want to lose any more. I heard that b/c pills or hormones can make you lose hair. I am very nervous. Any info will help tremendously! Thanks !!

sarah r replied: "i didnt have hair loss problems but it caused major mood swings."

Jennie replied: "I took Yasmin for 4 years and never had any hair loss. Sometimes if you stop for a month and then start back up you can get pretty nauseous. Other than that it was a great pill."

Angel replied: "Hope this helps with your decision. All birth control pills can cause side effects, but these side effects are usually mild and disappear after the first few months of use. Serious side effects do not occur very often. In clinical studies, women taking YASMIN® experienced side effects similar in amount and severity to those experienced by women taking other pills. I dont think that your hair loss is due to the pill. Some birth control pills contain ingredients that act similarly to hormones called androgens, and these can cause hair growth or acne."

boomer79sooner replied: "I took yasmin 3 years ago for about 2 years. It really messed me up. I would not recommend anyone take BC because it screws your hormones up and when you stop taking them you remain messed up. Yasmin will probably mess it up even more. You should be nervous if your going to be taking that crap."

what are side effects from taking yasmin not yaz, birth control pills? i've just started today, and i just want to know what are the side effects and how long does it take to notice them, good and bad...and is it true, yasmin suppose to have the lowest amount of estrogen in it?

0#_$0_c0nfu$3d replied: "When I was on Yasmin, I gained a little weight. Maybe like 4 or five pounds, not much at all. Other than that I didn't have any, but everyone is different. I'm not sure if it's THE lowest, but I'm sure it's really low. I just switched to Yaz (because of my periods), so I'm trying to figure out what's going to happen with that lol."

Side effects of Yasmin birth control? I just went on the birth control pill Yasmin a day ago. I woke up this morning incredibly ill and throwing up. All day I've felt somewhat sick. Has anyone else had problems with this specific pill?

TinyMe replied: "What time of day do you take the pill? If you take it during the day, try taking it at night. I had similar symptoms when I took a different pill during the day and when I switched to nights it actually worked much better. Give it another week. If after that week you still feel sick to your stomach, make an appointment with your doctor to try a different pill. I would suggest a pill with less estrogen. I had the same reaction all of the time when I was taking all estrogen pills vs the progesterone combo pills."

Iheartyou replied: "its gave me horrible headaches and horrible stomach aches but not throwing up it also killed my energy level and ugh made me feel just horrible emotionally to my doctor did tell me to switch and take it at night instead of morning and I did it helped barely so I just switched to yaz since its just less hormones"

Ballerina* replied: "First put on the market in the United States in 2001, Yasmin birth control has since been under heavy scrutiny for possible links to serious side effects like heart attack, stroke, and thrombosis. That, however, hasn’t stopped it from growing in popularity with revenue generated by Yasmin reaching nearly $500-million last year. As of 12/10/2008 there has been no Yasmin recall by either the FDA or the drug’s manufacturer. Like all prescription oral contraceptives (ie birth control pills) Yasmin is associated with increased risks of several serious conditions, such as: myocardial infarction, thromboembolism, stroke, hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, hypertension, tender breasts, mood swings, depression, weight gain, edema, and others. Yasmin contains the estrogen ethinyl estradiol and the progestin drospirenone, which can can work against the body’s normal mechanism for regulating salt and water balance, a situation that can lead to potentially serious heart and health problems in some high risk patients. (From Yasmin Birth Control Warning: Risk of Heart, Stroke December 11, 2008 ) Recent reports implicate the medication in serious health concerns for women who are consistently taking Yasmin. Reports of complications such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke and in some cases death resulting from these complications. Additionally, patients taking this medication could be at a higher risk for Yasmin side effects if they have preexisting conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney or liver impairment. While there has been no official Yasmin recall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned Bayer AG that the advertising campaign for Yasmin and Yaz were misleading, namely that the ads suggested a broad useage of the medication, minimized potentially serious side effects, and overstated the efficacy of the pill. Twice have letters been sent to Bayer AG, and once has Bayer AG been ordered to correct its ads, costing the company a total of $20 million. Bayer AG is also under obligation to submit future ad campaigns to the FDA for approval before it launches them in the U.S. One of the causes for concerns to patients taking the medication a chemical known as DRSP (drospirenone). This ingredient is what makes Yasmin and Yaz chemically different from other combination oral contraceptives. However, this is the ingredient that can raise your potassium level.the high levels of potassium that can accrue in a person's body after taking the medication for some time. High potassium levels in the blood can be dangerous for persons who are obese, diabetic, or who have chronically high blood pressure. Since the launch of Yasmin and Yaz, Bayer has reported sales estimated in the billions of dollars. It was reported as one of the highest earning drugs manufactured by the Bayer AG Corporation over the past few years. There have been several Yasmin class action lawsuits filed in different states. LegalView.info remains committed to consumer safety and provides an extensive base of legal resources for individuals who may have been harmed by such a medication. If you believe you may have a case, LegalView's newly launched Yasmin Information portal provides access to a Yasmin lawyer who can assist with developing litigation. Oftentimes, after suffering a serious side effect from a medication, individuals could be unable to receive compensation from their standard medical insurance, compensation for time away from work, or any other number of debilitating conditions due to medicine side effects. To this extent, it is imperative for any individual who believes they may be entitled to legal recourse contact an experienced Yasmin attorney to begin development of a case as soon as possible. Garnet replied: "I've taken Yaz for a year and have had no side effects. All B.C. pills have risks because it's hormones in the form of a pill, so it's possible for someone out there to have a bad reaction to it, and it seems that the FDA is giving extra warnings because there are more people having a reaction than expected. Only you can decide if you want to continue using B.C., the best person to discuss the risks/benefits is with your doctor."

what are the possible side effects when taking hydroxycut (non caffeine) with yasmin birth control pills? will it increase the potassium level in your body?

**MCR** replied: "I think thats something you should ask your doctor or drug store about."

Terri replied: "http://www.steadyhealth.com/hydroxycut_interact_birth_control_t60795.html It will affect birth control, just google "hydroxycut and yasmin""

Leanne♥ replied: "Ive been on yasmin for 4 months. My side effects have been slight weight gain (although not noticeable) My skin got alot worse at first but its started to get better. My breasts have gone up a size and they dont hurt (other pill brands made my breasts hurt constantly) My periods only last 3 days now and are very light. I havent had any bad effects, slight moodiness maybe but nothing my boyfriend cant handle :) Hope this helps"

Cara replied: "Hi there I went on Yasmin for similar reasons. It is a very good pill as it is light and had no serious side effects. Yes, it helped my skin clear out and my breasts did grow a bit (a welcomed side effect) but going off it my period has taken a long time to return normally. I did try a few other brands and they were not as successful. I do remember someone telling me because it is such a light pill you need to take it everyday at the same time."

What are common side effects of birth control pills? I just started taking Yasmin and was just curious is it normal to be swollen down there (like when you get turned on), want to have sex more and more sensitive during sexual intercourse? I have taken birth control pills a while back but couldn't remember what the side affects were. Another question I have is how long do you have to be on the pill for them to take full effect and not get pregnant? If you have sex when just starting the pill during the 10th day of your cycle is it likely you'll get pregnant?

Brey replied: "Weight gain, Headaches, Nausea, Blood clots are common side effects. I wouldnt rely on the pill to start working immediately so I would use condoms in addition if I were you. Also, Keep in mind -- condoms protect against STD/HIV. So they are always good to use. You really cant predict if you will get pregnant based on having sex the 10th day of your cycle because every woman's body is different. You will have to wait and take a pregnancy test."

proshoplaura replied: "Not sure about the swelling.... I took Yasmin for 9months and it didn't do anything like that. If you are a Sunday starter, you need to wait a week before the pill is fully effective."

Mary's Daughter replied: "Unfortunately, I don't have stats for how common each of these side effects are, but I copied some info on the bc pills: "Most women (in fact 50% of women) who start on the Pill stop within the first year because of unpleasant side effects. So these side effects are really largely those of the sixteen million who continue; so you can imagine how bad they must be for the 50% who stop. But what are they? Most women complain of increased irritability, increased propensity to depression, weight gain, and a reduced libido. Now, I haven't told you the worst reality about the Pill, which is really that it's an abortifacient. I've been talking about it as though it were a contraceptive, but it also works as an abortifacient. At least it says so in the insert that's with the Pill. It says that it works in three different ways: One is it stops ovulation, and that's clear enough. If it makes your body think it's pregnant, it will not ovulate because when you're pregnant, you don't ovulate because you have a new baby growing inside of you and there's no reason to ovulate. Or if that doesn't work, if there happens to be breakthrough ovulation (and no woman knows when that's happening in her body). A woman doesn't know month by month how her hormones are acting, whether she's not ovulating when she's on the Pill or if there's breakthrough ovulation. And the Pill can change the viscosity of the mucus. There's mucus that helps the sperm get to the egg and a certain mucus that prohibits the sperm from getting to the egg. And it will change the mucus. Or it will prevent the nidation of the fertilized ovum; that means fertilized ovum-a new little human being working down the fallopian tube, trying to implant itself in its mother's uterine wall, nests...nidates. But it prohibits that, and the woman sloughs off the new fertilized ovum. A woman doesn't know how this is working in her system. Norplant works this way. The IUD works this way. Depo-Provera works this way. Also, blood clots, heart disease and 11 of 12 studies show that there is a link between the pill and breast cancer" Of course, only the 12th is ever reported upon. But, if it makes any difference to you, my mom died when I was only 16 from complications from breast cancer. Her ONLY risk factor was that she had been on the pill for some time before she first became pregnant (a big no-no). Also, I know a doctor in town who no longer prescribes the pill at all b/c she had a 24 year old woman have a stroke--this woman did not smoke--her only risk factor? Again, just the pill. Your symptoms actually sound like your pill is NOT working. Maybe it is a lower level of estrogen? To be more turned on during sex and more sensitive is usually an indication of fertility--perhaps you missed a dosage or maybe you hadn't been on it long enough, but it sounds like you had sex during your fertile period just based on what you list above. You may want to get tested for a pregnancy just in case (although its fairly rare to get pregnant on the first try--it's a 3 out of 10 chance) and one wouldn't want to potentially harm your new fetus (if it does live through the first dosage and such, it can cause long term health effects if the pill is continued). And yes, days 9/10-15/16 are the most fertile days for a woman with a regular 28 day cycle. Good luck with everything. Repost with any further questions if I can be of more help! Take care!"

sparklestar84 replied: "I took yasmin right after I had my son and I didnt like it. I didnt know when my period was going to start . I also kept bleeding so I didnt know if i was or wasnt having my period."

How long does it take for the side effects of birth control pills to wear off? I was on Cerazette (a POP) for nearly 6 months and suffered pretty bad mood swings. I've been on Yasmin (combined pill) for 5 days and as yet I've noticed no improvement. How long will it take for the effects of the old pill to wear off and the effects of the new pill to kick in?

Skies Blue replied: "It may not wear off. Certain hormones may be causing you to be this way. The hormone may be in both of these pills. I took Yasmin and hated it. I was moody, gained 30 pounds in a month, and got acne. I switched pills and noticed a difference the same day I took the new pills. I lost all the weight immediately and was myself again. If it hasn't helped in a month just switch pills."

Yasmin birth control side effects? Hi, I started my period on sunday so I started taking the pill as well, its yasmin, not yaz. since i started taking it ive experience some moderate-severe lower abdominal pain, is this a normal side effect? does it go away or should i talk to my doctor about it?

starry_eyes11 replied: "I never had that side effect with Yasmin. It could just be cramps."

Dr. C. S. replied: "Yasmin and Yaz they both have the same hormones, difference is Yaz has a little more of drospirenone. But either one doesn`t give you that side effect you`ve mentioned."
