When ad man Wilford Brimley tells you to diet and exercise, doesn't that kinda smack as being hypocritical? You know Wilford Brimley...the actor who has a moustache that looks like a walrus? Here's a link to a funny, manufactured video with Wilford in it if you forget what he looks like: I like Wilford as an actor. But his ads for Liberty Medical are in such heavy rotation on the channels we watch, he's starting to wear a little thin.. He comes across with this real no-nonsense, down-to-earth pitch about how Liberty Medical can "help you live a better life" with their diabetes supplies, as he himself has diabetes. But when he starts to tell you how you need to "diet and exercise", I just think, "Well what about YOU, Jumbo?" Wilford is obese and I'm sorry, his being a senior citizen is no excuse. I just don't think he should be the poster child for dieting and exercise and hit us with this "do what makes sense" attitude when he himself can't seem to diet much, exercise (from what one can tell) and "do what makes sense". Your take? I do acknowledge that Wilford may not be in as high demand as he once was, so therefore, he will take the work that comes his way. And I really don't fault him as much as I do the Ad Agency or client that picked him to be their spokesperson -- IF-- the copy for the ad had to include the encouragement to diet and exercise. I'm sure he feels a little uncomfortable every time he has to deliver that line. And absolutely, dieting is not easy. But when it comes to spokespeople, there is the thought that one should be an example to others if you are going to represent the big idea. Richard Simmons did well with his "Sweatin to the Oldies" tape, featuring obese people working out. But Wilard isn't working out in these ads. At most, he sits on a horse which is at least some kind of exercise, I guess. I'm not slamming Willard though. I just think this is a bit incongruous and when they play this ad in such heavy rotation, it gets to be like a burr under my hide.

Mr. Vincent Van Jessup replied: "I like Brimley too, from way back John Carpenter's The Thing. So decency doesn't permit me to comment. I see your point of course. But we're all hypocrites, aren't we, about something? I don't want to climb on the bash-the-fat bandwagon here. He's an actor, so he's reciting someone else's words. He's probably aware of the incongruity himself. But it's in the script and in his contract, I guess. Peace"

fsnail replied: "His ads provide him income...and he doesn't practise what he preaches."

Arundhati Bakshi replied: "For all you know, he may diet and exercise. Losing weight is not easy. Since he is not much sought after as an actor anymore, he also has to make a living. Spokespeople don't usually have to believe what they are saying, their job is mainly to draw your attention."
