Hot Tub Asthma Facts in Questions
What are some symptoms of having bad asthma? I started having asthma when I wuz like 7 or 8 (i'm 12), and it wuz minor that time. Now I start whezzing and coughing, and I think I have to start taking my asthma pump to school. And one weird thing is when I eat something, it feels like it's hard for me to breath. And another thing is weather changes. Since its like globing warming for like 1 day, then the other day it starts snowing(where I live). Like when I went to a hotel, and I went in the hot tub, it wuz hard 4 me 2 breathe...HELP!

Natasha G replied: "i have astham and i also have this you find it hard to breathe when you eat because when you chomp and swallow you dont breathe so it makes you pant so to say the weather as always the cold will make you worse as its the chest that tightens and you cough and wheeze. id say take your pump to school with you."

kris55a replied: "your asthma is not under coutroul. you probably should be changing your meds. talk to your dr. he will put you on the right meds."

chlorine affecting asthma? can chlorine in a home hot tub affect asthma

tinkicker0 replied: "Yes Chlorine is an irritant and will irritate your airways. Take your preventer before you go near and keep your reliever nearby."

Sophia replied: "You bet. Any strong chemical odour or scent or irritant like smoke/pollution/fumes etc. can trigger an asthma attack. Some people are so sensitive that smoke on your clothing is enough to set off an asthma attack. So avoid people who smoke too."

navyhm1983 replied: "Yes, It can effect a person with out asthma as well. It would be best to all ow the water to sit in the hot tub heated for a few hours prior to trying it. If possible open a window and put a fan in it to ventilate the fumes. If you are an asthma person NEVER go in the hot tub when you are alone. At least have some one sitting near the tub to talk to. Just in case you have trouble breathing and can't talk or yell for help. :o) Jerry"

MEPHISTOPHELES replied: "Simple answer - yes!!"

All About Winston replied: "Technically, anything could trigger an asthmatic attack. Asthma is an inflammatory disease. Everyone has an immune system which fights off foreign bodies. The latter includes viruses, bacteria, noxious fumes, pollen...etc. However, asthmatic patient have an overactive reaction to certain foreign bodies. Working through several chemical messengers in the body, the airway constricts making it hard to breathe. During an asthmatic attack, patients have a characteristic wheezing sound as they try to breathe. Different asthmatics have different "triggers" ( irritants leading to an asthma attack). Some has exercised induced asthma while others have an asthmatic attack when exposed to cold air (i.e. Winter season). It seems in your case, chlorine is one of your triggers - which is not unusual since chlorine irritates the lungs regardless if you have asthma or not."

Geoff Shaw replied: "Yes. There are so many different irritants and they all have different degrees of affect on people. Chlorine is one of these and also the sudden changes in temperature from getting in and out of a hot tub can bring on asthma symptoms."

star_janyie replied: "most deffinatly, it effects me when i go swimming sometimes. allwas keep your inhaler near u and have someone near the hot tub with u at all times incase u have an attack and need help :D hopefully you wont have an attack but if u do calm yourself down and get out of the hot tub, (therefore getting away from your trigger eg chlorine)"
