How long does it take for Propranolol to work? I just started taking Prppranolol 80mg slow realase in the morning. For my GAD. i was on Celexa but it did not work. I think it may be helping a little but am not sure if it really does anything. ( i am only on day 5) My doctor recommended to take xanax on an as needed basis. He also said I may need to increase my dosage of Proranolol. Is anyone else on this? How long did it take to really start working? Is anyone taking a higher dosage? I just want the constant adrenaline rush and nervousness to stop. Any information is welcome!

Toss that Yeyo and Run replied: "I started taking 160mg in 2005 and I am still waiting for it to work. It doesn't control my high blood pressure either and that is what it was created for."

How long does it take for Propanolol 20mg to work? I'm a 17 year old, 278lbs male. My doctor put me on Propranolol 20mg for my rapid heart beat and high blood pressure. How long does it usually take before it starts working? I'm nervous about taking pills that messes with my heart but he assured me it's safe.

gallop replied: "You are on a very low dose, so don't be too concerned. Peak levels in your blood will be reached within one to four hours after you take it."

ChaZ replied: "generally beta blockers (propranolol and other similar drugs) are used to lower ur blood pressure, soooo really you shouldn't be able to notice the effects of the drug working on an instantious level (as in feel better with in hours). they do tend to work within the hour, but if ANYTHING you may be able to feel SOME sort of difference after a week or so. but don't trust me on this, see your doctor or pharmacist if you're concerned. That's the best advise i can give u. outa my own curiousity, i understand you're fairly over weight, but to be having hyper tension at 17 years of age is not a usual occurance. is it caused by a genetic defect, or some sort of disease?"

Been given Propranolol for my migraines, it has reduced them.. but..? I am still getting migraines..is that normal? What should I take for those migraines? Migraleve doesn't work for me. and How long will it take for the propranolol to start working effectively? Have been taking them for a little over a week, 40 mg twice a day. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

gratefully_bj replied: "may need to be increased or switched to an extended release tab, have u discussed this with your md?"

Devyn replied: "Give them a full 2 weeks to be fully productive. If not working after 2 weeks, talk to MD as stated above me."

IndianaJohn replied: "propranol is a narcotic isn't it? go see a neurologist for some triptans like imitrex"

shellnwill replied: "Chiropractic is a great thing for migraines. It fixes the problem which is more than likely a misalignment in your cervical spine. Any drug will cover it up but not fix the problem. You may also have other symptoms that will be helped, such as allergies, sinuses, high blood pressure, frequent colds, etc. Check it out- it works great."

jackie m replied: "It takes a few weeks before they start working - 15 years ago I took them for depression when my marriage ended, I also got monthly migraine's and they also helped the migraine's, the first few days to a week they will make you feel sick and constipated, the following week you will start to get used to them, they can disturb your sleep and I found it best to take them in the morning, they can also affect your appetite so that you don't feel hungry and you could lose weight, I found after a month they worked well, I took them for 10 years."

Medana replied: "Propranolol is a narcotic drug and if taken for a long period can have serious side effects. Have you considered trying to find a herbal alternative to help your migraines or even acupuncture treatment ? Try asking around or in the case of acupuncture, ask your GP if he would give you a referral for the treatment. Good Luck"
