Weight loss and tuna fish? Hi! Can anyone tell me about how much weight I can lose by August 10 if I eat nothing but plain canned tuna fish all the time? I have already done it for 2 days and it's not bad at all. Please do not write any negative comments about mercury, or concerns about "lack of vitamins" or "how bad Atkin's diet is" etc. Just some answers from anyone who has tried it. I plan to drink a lot of water and take fiber pills and multivitamins, and also walk 60 minutes/day. I am at 145 right now and I am doing everything I can to get to 118 or so before my wedding. Any thoughts? Thanks folks!

mrpnut replied: "oooooooooo boy, here we go again....ok well if you wanna live on just tuna for that long go for it but i guarantee by like the third day your going to be sick of it. as far as how many calories your losing it would depend on how much exercise your doing and how much tuna your eating.....you can go to caloriesperhour.com to figure out how many calories you burn doing different activities....good luck"

the_observer replied: "The only weight loss strategy is to eat less and exercise more. I doubt that eating nothing but canned tuna fish is a very good strategy as you need to eat a variety of foods to stay healthy. You must be confusing this sort of eating plan with the Tarnowner diet (Scarsdale) which was popular in the 70's. The Scarsdale plan relied a lot upon tuna fish. The diet did include a lot of vegetables to be consumed with the tuna fish though. All the other things you are doing will result in weight loss if you keep your calorie intake low. Go to a dietician instead of relying on a fad diet."

munni replied: "Tunna alone will make you sick.why dont you try other ways like cut your carbohydrates, sugar and oil.rest is all yourchoice ,good luck"

help with my weight loss commitment PLEASE???!!!? I'm trying to eat healthy and stay committed to weight loss. I weight 247 and I am 25 years old. It seems everytime I try to stay committed to weight loss I'm scared to eat certain foods that I think will make me gain weight when actually It's not bad food at all. I just seem to feel different ever since I started this weight loss commitment. ..I feel as If something Is wrong with my body temperature or something...and I am scared to eat foods such as tuna fish sandwhich and subs, all because I don't want to blow my weight loss committment. I know I take things hard on myself. what are some healthy foods, and what should I eat? Also HOW do you stay committed? best answer 10 points.

Christine replied: "it is very hard to lose weight and it does take a lot of commitment. i have lost 30 pounds in 4 months. i eat 1500 calories a day, do cardio 6 days a week, weights 2 days a week and pilates 7 days a week. my weight loss has been slow, but steady. i still have 44 pounds to hit my goal, but i know i will get there. there are days where i am so frustrated i want to give up, but i remind myself how far i have come and that keeps me going. i sent you my email address in case you would like a weight loss buddy. hope to talk to you soon."

job3786 replied: "Go to. Plug in age/height/weight and how much you'll be exercising and it will calculate how many calories you will need to stay at (or under) in order to maintain your weight, lose weight, or lose weight quicker. Anything under the lose weight quicker would be unhealthy. Try to make most of your calories good calories like protein and complex carbs while choosing foods that are lower in sugar. Sugary foods have empty calories which aren't good for your body and are more apt to store as fat. Try not to weigh but say...a couple times a month and at times you feel confident. Just know that when you DO step on the scales, your weight will show progress. Weigh more and you are more likely to get frustrated and not stay as committed. But knowing that when you DO step on the scales it will show progress will help you stay committed. Instead, let your mind be your scale for awhile. Guesstimate how much you have lost and affirm, not just predict, how much you will have lost by a certain time period. Just don't think about it too much. Your subconscious will know what to do. Thinking leads to frustration and hesitation. Oh, and make sure to tell yourself that losing weight IS NOT as hard as it seems. You'll be surprised at how easy something becomes with a little affirmation. Good luck :D"

Martha H replied: "Ok, so there are two important things to weight loss. Eating right and exercising. Eating right is the tricky part working out no so tricky. There are a few things to avoid, sweets, fats, starches. I know how easy it is to over analyze a meal, don't you will drive yourself crazy. Just use your best judgment. The key to losing weight is burning off more calories than you take in. Good Luck."

been good replied: "Take out of your diet anything that is heavy in sodium. This includes soups, sauces, prepackaged meals, casseroles. Do not remove sodium completely, though, because you need some, but not as much as we normally eat, which is 4000-6000 mg. per day! If you eat only pure foods, vegetables, and meats, it doesn't matter how many or how much you eat. Don't count fat, count sodium, and don't exceed 1200 mg. per day. P>S> I went from 172 to 135 by doing this. I am 5'5'. You do not need to be 115 lbs. at your height. Go for a more reasonable goal of 125 to stay healthy. Set mini-goals of 3-4 lbs. per month and you'll get there easily. And remember that your body needs a break once in a while. I eat chocolate, and when I eat out, sometimes I cannot eat low sodium. Make up for it later and don't beat yourself up if you mess up. Keep it positive and celebrate your losses."

ILOVESM replied: "hey i was lose weight by how... i don't eat that much...... and work out a lot all the times and as long by allday to walking around...its will make u lose weight faster.....and drink a lot a lot of water!!!!!!"

Joey B replied: "This looks pretty good actually. Try doing more cardio like jogging or riding your bike. Do NOT try to starve yourself though by cutting to many calories. That will do more harm than good trust me"

lovescourt replied: "Try this healthy and delicious meal! 4-5 slices oscar meyer shaved turkey sprinkled cheese 2 slices of whole wheat bread put a little bit of reduced fat butter in a frying pan and put the bread in the pan and toast it a bit, then in another frying pan (or the same one if you have room) put the turkey in and warm/crisp it up a bit and sprinkle cheese on top to melt. Then add your favorite toppings such as lettuce and tomato and enjoy! For added yummyness and still healthy, try campbells chicken tortilla soup (the reduced calorie/ reduced sodium one) It is so good!"

Any way to improve my weight loss? I am female, 5'5", large frame. I've lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks and 4 inches off my waist... I am impatient! I know it won't happen overnight, but I work my butt off and I would like to see results faster than I am! I have heard quite a few things about working out; what's good, what's bad, how to do it, etc. But, I wanted to see what you think about it. Is there any way I can improve my weight loss? Am I doing something wrong? Or should I keep at going at what I am doing now? Is it true that your heartbeat has nothing to do with fat burning, it all is with your breathing?? Here's the lowdown.... My routine: 1 hour kickboxing 3 days a week (this includes 10mins jumping rope, stretching, and then the rest of the hour is non-stop movement of my whole body.) 1 day (at least) at the gym, 2 hours While at the gym I usually stretch, warm up for the first 15-20, a couple of reps of chin-ups and dips (low weight,) work my abs with a couple of reps of sit-ups/crunches/leg raises, and then I get on the treadmill for at least 40 minutes for my cardio and that's it. My diet consists of LOTS of fruits and vegetables, tuna fish, and fat-free turkey sandwiches. Most of my diet is the fruits and vegetables though. I drink a ton of water; at least 3 liters unless I am working out, then it is a little bit more. Thank you for your time!! :) MATTY J You did a great job in '30 days!' How'd you do it? What's your routine?

Matty J replied: "That sound great already to be honest I cant harly do chin ups lol Answer my question and if you think im doing oryt il tell you how I did it ? Im ment to have a six pack in 30 days ? .;_ylv=3?qid=20090318091712AAVlRe5"

Call me G replied: "20 pounds in 6 weeks is amazing! But if you really want that extra push to drop the rest, you need a targeted program from a professional. Try. They have a free two-week trial with their fitness coach, Mel that's really great and easy to use. He will talk to you about your current workout, your goals, etc and then show you exactly what exercises and how many reps of what you need to be doing to see immediate results. Plus, my fave, he plans out your meal options daily. Good luck!"

is this weight loss healthy? My dad is 36 years old and in September he went on a diet. He NEVER exercised and still kept losing weight. All he eats is apples, oranges, tuna fish, and rice cakes. He lost about 80 pounds since September and keeps losing weight doing this. I mean he looks like a little puney kid now, and my whole family knows he looks weird. He even faints sometimes and he chews gum all gross and snaps when he chews it lol. it is so disgusting and annoying, so any thoughts on this? I know he lost weight but he is so small and sickly skinny. He used to weight 230 and now weighs 150. well he chews gum to get the cravings away he's about 5'11"

VOLLEYBALLY replied: "No, it is not healthy at all. The mercury alone in the tuna will become a problem for him. He is not getting the nutrients he needs eventhough those fruits are part of a good balanced diet. Plain and simple you need to eat right AND exercise."

Carissa B replied: "Well, weightloss to a certain extent is extremely healthy. But it sounds like he has taken it way too far. Ask his doctor for help."

pathfinder replied: "He better seek medical advice before continuing to do this, before he does irreparable damage to himself."

Anita replied: "The best anwser I can give it TALK to the doctor!!! Hope is all okay. Well good luck!"

sandy replied: "im not sure if you are more annoyed by his image or the way he chews gum"

brodan129 replied: "well if he already lost the weight i think he should get off the diet before theres nothing left...id suggest eating ribs thatl make him better..."

caffsans replied: "it is good he was able to lose weight =the reason he is feeling so lousy is that he is not eating nutritiously"

coqueto replied: "If he's fainting, then it probably isn't the healthiest diet. I don't know what snapping gum has to do with anything but have you thought of telling your dad that you think he's lost enough weight and that you don't think he should lose more? Without knowing how tall he is by how much he weighs -- nor his body-type and fitness level I can't tell you if he is too skinny or not. Talk to him and find out what his weight loss goals are and what he'll do when he reaches them. Plus, positive reinforcement (ie. saying that he doesn't need to lose anymore weight because he's skinny enough as it is) may be just what he's looking for. Good luck!"

towanda replied: "I agree with the gum snapping. It is revolting. When you lose weight it is important to eat a balanced diet and I don't see the greens. I know that tuna has a lot of mercury in it and there have been advisories against eating too much. Better to eat fish that are smaller and have not been in the ocean long enough to absorb the mercury. There are things like turkey and turkey ham that are extremely low in calories and I eat on sliced apples. Get him on vitamins immediately. A varied diet is important."

tressroy replied: "First why the hell is he doing this? Second... nope this is not healthy! Maybe for a little while but for 6 mos? He needs to get a grip he is acting anorexic..... Deprivation is why he chews that gum like that. Why is he on a death wish?"

Amy replied: "No it is not healthy at all Maybe he is bulimic. There is no way he can be losing that much or even anything from just eating like that. Or he isn't eating much."

icycrissy27blue replied: "well your dad lost both muscle and fat and since his diet is not a lifestyle change rather than a temporary quick fixer me upper he lost all that weight plus water weight. and his diet is not heathy but rather alarming. if he passes out and is becomning too skinny and all he eats are fruits and rice cakes which have little caloric value as well as nutritinal value, that resulted in him passing out.also chewing gum keeps your dad from shoving food in his mouth and it is my best suggestion that he puts some weight on because he has caused damaged to his body with this yo yo diet of little food and no exercise. if he wanted to lose weight the right way he should of eaten the food that he enjoyed before but in moderation vs. almost no food at all. he gets no protein, no carbs and no fats which is bad because every person needs fats to survive as well as pasta and other carbs to keep their sugar level the way it is supposed to be-at equilibrioum. you and your family have to intervene because your dad will not change his eating habits because he has seen these great results with minimal food.if not take him to a doctor who can help him."

gorgeous gale replied: "no. any diet without exercise is bad. he needs to exercise and that way he will have a wider selection of food!"

What, what, what?? replied: "Loosing a little under 11.5 a month in body weight is not unreasonable, honestly. But, what is important is where he fits within BMI guidelines. How healthy his weight loss, also is dependent on where he falls within the BMI, according to weight and height. If he is underweight, then it is obvious he seriously has an eating disorder. Now, BMI is only suggested, but is is a suggested guideline tool by nutrition and dietary medical experts. The fainting signals possible serious health issues...and, it could be diet related. I can't say whether it is or not, since I don't know what his estimate caloric intake is or other factors that need to be observed, such as weight, blood tests, etc. Chewing gum the way you describe is not really an important concern, but only to you and others that find it socially unacceptable--its a so what. But, the 'small' and 'sickly skinny' concerns me and prompts me to have another adult confront him on the issue of seriously seeking a physical...especially the fainting spells...it could be something as simple as not obtaining enough calories to something more serious as a brain tumor. The link below is to a BMI Calculator. Use it to show your father where he stands in regard to healthy weight. While you seem to be indifferent and find his situation humorous, it sounds serious. Edit add: I realize that the gum chewing is to stave off cravings...but, my response to it is because of the way that you had written about it--its still not a serious issue to be concerned about. I looked at his weight and hieght ratio. He is in healthy range. His base weight, if using the BMI calculator to guide, is 144#s. Anything lower is 'underweight.' He should now be concerned about leveling off and eating healthy to maintain his weightloss. He has done well. He should still see a doctor, in my opinon...just for a check up and to address the fainting spells. And, an exercise program to buff up!:-)"

IMPORTANT: Will I see drastic weight loss? I am 5'3 105lbs I used to weigh 110lbs. For the past week I have eaten: -1 orange (breakfast) -salad (lunch) -tuna fish (dinner) -cookie (snack) -burn 150 calories running on a treadmill -burn 100 calories doing short cardio (I'm really busy) I lost 5lbs in 1 week doing this and am now 105lbs. How long do I have to continue to be 98lbs, thanks!!! P.S. for those of you who say i don't need to lose weight, i really do trust me!

chevella70 replied: "It is important that you keep a safe rate of weight loss. If you lose it slowly, it's easier to keep it off. If you drop 5 or more pounds a week, you'll gain it back. I suggest eating more. I know, that sounds like it won't work. Trust me here. Increase your breakfast to include maybe some low fat cereal. The carbs will jump start your metabolism and keep it going all day long. Get some crunchy veggies or some fruit to snack on all day. That keeps up your energy, but keeps you from feeling hungry and having cravings. DRINK WATER! At least 8 glasses a day. Eliminate the cookie and replace it with a whole grain muffin. This makes sure you get the fiber you need. Plus, you get that mid-day jump to your metabolism. Add some veggies to your dinner. Also, you MUST increase your protein intake. Do this in the form of fish or chicken on your salad at lunch. Most people don't realize that the weight they lose when they diet is mostly water weight and muscle mass. To make SURE you burn FAT, eat protein enriched fish or chicken and do some strength training. The more muscle you build, the higher your metabolism because your muscles feed on fat. Keep that in mind. Alternate days in your exercise program. Do the treadmill and cardio Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Then, do upper and lower body strength training on Tuesday and Thursday. (lifting weights, rock climbing, anything high-resistance) Finally, swim on the weekends. This is a fun way to keep yourself active on the weekends. With all of this, it should take you less than a month to get there. More like 3 weeks. Good luck!"

Cameron replied: "Are you trying to lose fat, water or muscle? You're going to lose a lot of your muscle eating nothing but oranges and lettuce before dinner. I think you will probably lose weight but it won't be drastic. And good luck gaining back your muscle mass. As you get older that gets even harder. When I say "older", I don't mean old. By the time you are in your 30's you will have trouble building muscle."

cutiehoney replied: "Some of my co-workers has been in this diet method. You eat oat-meal with no cream or suger as breakfast, eat vegeis or fruite, nats every 2 to 3 hours. If you choose to eat vegeis, you can only use one spoonful of dressing. You eat whatever you want to eat at night, but, you can't eat anything after 8pm. You have to stay away from carbs of course... Some people choose not to use any seasonings other than masterd. It sounds extream?"

inciquay replied: "2 hours of exercise might be too much! By exercising that much you're body starts breaking down muscle for fuel instead of your fat. Make sure you're lifting weight too! Eat small frequent meals, focus on the foods and really taste them as you chew. Give yourself 20 minutes to register as full before you attempt eating any more in that one sitting. Eat foods that are high in water. They fill you up faster and you can generally eat more of them. Foods like nonstarchy fruit and veggies (less potatoes, corn, and bananas - more citrus, melon, apples and broth-based soups) Eat breakfast! Make sure you have a small protein filled snack after you work out. In fact make sure you have a amall bit of protein with every meal (add nuts or small amounts of cheese to salads etc.) Self.com and muscleandfitnesshers.com have great plans although I go to Men's Health a lot cuz they don't give you the girly bullshit."

am I fat? need advice on weight loss? Im 18 almost 19, 5'8 and 135 and a size 4 jean (usually) but I feel fat and like i should loose weight but to loose any more weight I pretty much have to stop eating. I cant eat wheat or milk either. help please! I want to loose my tummy fat and the crunches and oblique exercises have just made my tummy look bigger, not flat? and to loose weight i feel like I at this point have to eat nothing because I eat relatively healthy and have stopped drinking soda and only have tea with a little sugar every once and a while. I eat plenty of fruits and veggies and lean proteins like steaks, chicken, and tuna fish. Im afraid doing more crunches will just make me look fatter! what can I do? help! I'm also starting a no eating after 8pm so hopefully that will help me because Im prone to late night snacking (nothing terribly unhealthy and in small portions) I definitely want to this the healthy way but I cant afford any trainers or health advice because I'm a poor college student. I tried weight watchers for tips and they refuse to help me because they say im already a healthy weight. I dont want to loose weight, just fat and I know I'm so close to a flat stomach! I just need to know how to get it! my weight range is 129-135 (lowest in the morning and highest at night because I drink a lot of water and eat fiber rich foods). so do you think if I just keep with the ab workouts it will eventually start flattening out after an initial gain in size?

KittyCat23 replied: "please do not start starving yourself, it will make things worse, maybe you should go to a diet expert so they can make you a special plan, they know whats best"

Braga replied: "Great job! reason why your tummy is growing is because your abs are ripping underneath your tummy and theres a layer of fat covering the abs. Quick answer: Your on the right path. Its good to see your stomach growing. Lots of proteins will help build your ab muscles. It will take some time before the muscle overtakes the fat unless you are doing cardio. Oh, and eating after night is really BS. Your body doesnt know when night comes. Eating before you sleep keeps your body warm actually because its digesting food. Anyone who says the food you eat immedietly turns to fat because its late at night is wrong. No matter what time of the day, the body digests food to absorb as much nutrients it can. What makes the night time any different? Just make sure what your eating before bed isnt a meal. Keep it small. EDIT: Yes. Keep up with the ab workouts and youll definatly see them start to rip through. Make sure you eat your protein for those abs to grow and your workout wasnt all a waste. Good luck!"

Charlotte_x replied: "No you're definitely not fat! All I'd say is maybe try different types of crunches, working different muscles, maybe? I don't know, I'm interested to see what others say on this one because I'm in almost exactly the same boat!"

Im starting a new weight loss plan, I think I have the right food plan down. What exercises will work best? My usual eating habbits were no breakfast, have a late lunch, and then bring home something from the pizza place I work at late at night for dinner, usually a sub. Late night eating is horrible, I know this. My new plan is to eat small meals through out the day. For example starting with a breakfast of cottage cheese and fruits, then with a snack of carrot sticks etc. Lunch I will have a tuna fish wrap and a fruit, and so on. I think I am on the right track with the food. I have also invested in some Lean Shake, and hydroxycut. Also a multi vitamin. I think these things may help me reach my goal. But I am just not sure what exercise plan will help me see results. I give up easy on that end of the deal. Should I only start off with cardio, or should I also be weight lifting? Some one please help me with an exercise plan to get the best and fastest results!

Jeff of the 140 IQ ;-) replied: "Most definitely start with cardio. It improves stamina and gets those muscles ready for toning exercises. 30+ minutes of cardio 3-5 times a week is what you should shoot for. If you can't do 30 minutes to start, work your way up to it. Once you get closer, start adding in some toning exercises. I've included a link to the mayo clinic's finess site. It has plenty of good information on exercising and diet. As for your diet, you are definitely on the right path. Just make sure to keep your calorie intake between 1300-1500 per day. Any less and you won't have the energy to get the max benefit of the workout. Any more and the weight loss will be slower."

Fengshuitips replied: "Weight training coupled with a certain extent of aerobic exercises will be the best choices. But mind you though - exercises are not the ultimate answer to losing weight. But diet is. So, focus on the right kind of foods to eat so that your body will be able to burn fat day and night because of the right choices of foods taken."
